"DICHARD REEVES and Co. havo it ecoivod instructions from tho consignees o sell on an early day (duo notice of which will bo given), 12-Horse Powor Portable Steam Engine, of tho celebrated manufacture of Marshall, Son & Co., Britannia Iron Works, Gainsborough. Tho boiler is multi-tubular ; tho shell is of best Staffordshire plate, and tho firebox all of Low Moor iron ; the tubes are wrought iron, well disposed for strength, and with ample spaco'fortho circulation of water, and the settling of sediment } the ash pan fits closely to tho bottom of fire-box, and has a flap-door attached to regulate tho draught. The appendages comprise second lock-up safety valvo, steamo pressure guago and signal whistle, stoam indicator, glass-water guago, guago cock, blow-off cock, &c. Tho boiler is clothed, with hair felt, lagged with wood, and cased with sheet iron, and its capacity is larger than usual for tho noniinaljpowor of the engine.
The working parts of tho engine aro arrangod with much simplicity on tho top of tho boiler, whore they can bo well seen and easily got at by an attendant. By an improved self-contained arrangement of cylinder and stoam chest, access can bo had to the slide, throttle, and stop-valves, by simply taking off the steam-chest id. The cylinder is also covered with hair felt, wood and sheet iron, in the same way as the boiler, and fitted with connected blow-off cocks and groaso cups. Tho piston is metallic, and of improved construction, and has a steel piston rod ; the slide bars and valvo rods aro also of stool, Tho crank shaft is mado of the best scrap ron of tho locomotive form, and of sufficient longth to carry a fly-wheel at ono end, and a pulley at tho other, so that the machinery can bo driven from either sido of tho cngino, or both sidos at tho samotirae. The fly-iwhccl is turned on its periphery, and being accurately countorweighted, longitudinal vibration of tho engine is prevented, which, when it occurs, not only increases wear and tear, but is a frequent cause of tho driving strap running off. Provision is made for reversing tho motion of tho engine by a simple adiustmont of the slide valve eccontrio, and the speed is regulated by a direct-acting governor. A force pump, driven vertically from the crank shaft, is attached to the boiler for supplying it with water ; but a Gifford's injector can bo applied instead if required. All pins, oyes, and nuts, aro case hardened ; and self-acting lubricators, wrought out of tho solid material, are fitted to the journals and slides.
This engine is fitted with a completo set of case-hardenedjliainmers, firing tools, funnel, tube, brush, oil feeder, sparo guage glass, sparo fusible plug, and a waterproof cover, and furnished with chock chains, ook chains, shoo and chain.
This engine has been tested undor stoam at a high pressure boforo it left tho works. The power is calculated at 351bs prossuro of stoam in the boiler, but it may bo safoly worked at 601bs pressure (the boilorplatos being of extra strength, and thoroughly well stayed) at which it would give off double its nominal power. This guage is mado to template and guage thoughout. For further particulars api>ly to the auctioneers. RICHARD REEVES & CO., 2459 Wharf-stroet. ~~ THIS DAY, WEDNESDAY, MAY 23, At 120 'clock sharp.
