In the Supreme Court Mrs Spendlove tried for infanticide, was acquitted on the capital charge, but found guilty of concealment of birth, and sentenced to eighteen months' imprisonment.

Slight shocks of an earthquake were felt here on Sunday night.

A verdict for heavy damages was given by a jury, in the Court of Queen's Bench on February 24, in a case of compensation for a railway accident tried before the Lord Chief Justice. The Rev. Mr Eland and his wife were sufferers by the wellremembered Staplehurst accident, and it was proved in evidence that their injuries were of tho most serious character. The jury awarded damages to the extent of $4500. ■ f . r
