West Coast Times. TUESDAY, MAY 22, 1866.
We desire to draw attention to two letters which appear in another column, with reference to the non-admission into the Hospital of an unfortunate woman, brought up from Okarita under circumstances demanding the tenderest and most careful medical treatment. We learn from independent sources of information, that it is a fact that no accommodation is provided at this establishment for the reception of female patients. Two aro at present lodged within tho Hospital grounds ; but they are in a small tent, and there is no room for the admission of another inmate. To what uses the old Hospital building in Revcll street is applied, wo are unaware We believe it is held availablo for the reception of certain destitute and emergent cases. But it would appear that no provision is made for the maintenance, tho nursing, or the medical treatment of patients. The circumstances demand a searching investigation ; and if it should appear that tho authorities aro wrongfully blamed for a disregard of tho common requirements of humanity, thoy havo y themselves to thank for ifc. The public impression undoubtedly is, that no proper provision is mado for cases demanding urgent attention, and that impression is justified by facts, so far as they are known.
