Our old friond, tho p.s. Yarra, is at present undergoing a thorough overhaul of machinery, etc., preparatory to her oxpcct?d winter's work in connection with tho ocean-going steamers. jDho Culodonia has at last arrived li£ro i^Hitf " is safe "m liarSor. "*Sho~ has" lfatt "vory sovoro weather, and had to put into Wanganui North/from which anchorago she sailed a few days ago. The Isabella Jackson is twonty-seven days out from Lyttelton. Captain Ehnsloy reports southerly gales of wind tho first portion of tho passage, since which light southerly weather, which prevented his arrival off this port boforo I yesterday morning. Tho Challenge, yesterday, on early tido, towed in tho Isabella Jackson, from Lyttolton, and subsequently towed in tho Caledonia, so long overdue, with safety, She then, at tho top of high water, towed out th« barquo Alma, for Melbourne, belonging to the samo owners, Messrs Spcnce I3ros. Tho Braoo again left for Okaritn yestorday, with tho lona in tow ; both vessels woro noarly full of cargo, but had very fow passongors. Tho Bruce had a number of cabin passengers, including tho Roman Catholio Bishop — Viard, of Wellington, and tho Rev. Mr M'Girr, bound on a mission to Okarita. Tho Bruce will also proceed to Bruce Bay, from Okarita 5 and hor agent, Mr Groor, has this trip gono down in her, to ascertain if practicable, whether tho entrance to anothor river north of Bruco Bay is navigablo for tho steamer Bruco, as wo understand overtures havo been mado to the owner to carry cargo thither. Ifc is also understood tho fow minors thoro aro doing well. Tho P. N.Z. and A.R.M. Compauy's stoamer Claud Hamilton arrived in tho roadstead punctually to hor timo yestorday, afc four p.m., but as the Company's contract stoamor, Persevere, was afc tho Grey, up to tho hour of our going to press wo are without any communication with her. Sho is from Dunediu and intermediate New Zealand ports, and by outadvertising columns wo porcoivo she is to bo despatched, cariyjng passongors for all parts of Now Zealand, on Friday, 18th instant. Tho Lioness yostorday wont oufc over tho bar simultaneously with tho Challenge. Tho latter steamer, however, succeeded in securing tho Isabella Jackson for a tow. Tho Lioness went oufc seaward, and taking in tow tho Dispatch, proceeded for the bar, but tho tido being on the ebb, sho prudently dropped hor tow and ran insido, sounding as blio came in ; proceeding out again, she — although finding plenty of water on the bar — communicated with tho Dispatch, and decided to let hor lio at anchor for tho night. To-day she will take her in tow, and wo trust will bring hor safely insido.
