SOLICITOR : H. E. CAMPBELL. SECRETARY : H. E. CAMPBELL. Tomporary offices.— Mr Campbell's office, Rovoll-streot. This company is formed for tho purpose of laying a Railway along tho lino of coast between Hokitika and Groymouth, and .intermediate places, as near to tho present diggings as possible— namely, tho Hau Hau, Arahura, Auckland, Toromakau, Wamioa Creole, Saltwater River, and others, for passenger and goods traffic. Tho promoters havo received from tho Provincial Govornmont an assuranco of support, and ovory oncouragomont that could bo expectocl in furthoranco of their project. Tho Government havo also engaged to givo thorn tho uso of a sufficient portion of land along tho lino of coast, within fivo chains of high water mark, to lay their pormanont way. Tho admitted fact of tho uncertain nature of the prosont steamboat communication between tho two towns boing wholly inadequato to moot tho requirements of tho district generally, has been ono great inducement in bringing this company into oxistonco: tho steamboats can only sorvo tJio wants of tho two points of arrival and doparturo, whoreas this company will convoy passengers and carry goods along tho whole lino at a greatly reduced tariff 1 of charges than can possibly bo porforcned by tho present modes of communication, and will thereby reduco tho rates of freight to much less than ono half those at present charged by tho packers from town, with an additional advantage in a saving of time. Still, this Company [will not compoto injuriously with tho packors, as they will still bo required to convoy goods from tho various stations along tho lino into tho interior, and also tho advantago of .being onoblqd to make two trips a day from !any station to thoir points of dolivory instoad of only ono, as at presont from town, "and will also bo saved considerable timo now spent unnecessarily in delays in town from various causes which would not thon arise, On tho other hand, tho Company will bo in a position to competo successfully in ovory way with tho steamboats by thoir punctual and regular communication — frco from delays by floods, bars, or low tides — at all hours ; and with a saving of timo— as thoy contemplate being ablo to mako tho through journey in one hour. In addition thoy would also form a daily mail communication botween Hokitika, tho Groy, and iutormodiato places. Another advantago which tho Company will socuro to tho public will bo tho safe transit of goods, frco from damago, compared with tho conveyanco by soa. It is an authentic fact that great difficulty is experionced in obtaining rcdroSs from ocean going vosso.'s for damago dono to goods on board, and in many cases sovoro losses aro sustained by shippers of goods between tho two centres ; and tho owners of such vessols gouorally succeed in being oxonorated from blame, howovor caroloss thoy may bo, from tho inability of tho sufferers to obtain proof of such carelessness, or thoir ignorance of vossols being uusoaworthy when shipping thoir goods. No such risks would occur on this Railway. Tho Company bind thomselvos to havo trucks and carriagos [properly so. cured from tho effects of bad weather or otherwise, and no damago could ariso, except from actual accidonts which could not bo foroscon, Tho pormanont way will bo laid subject to tho approval of tho Govornmont Engineer ; tho public will thoroforo havo a guarantoo that tho works will bo constructod in a propor and substantial manner, Tho Comnuttoo proposo to oreot stations along tho lino\t convoniout dis« tanoos, and at tho uoavost points to tho
