TJio promoters havo received from the Provincial Government an assurance of support, and ovory oncouragoment that could bo expected in furtherance of their project. The Government have also ongaged to give thorn tho use of a sufficient portion of land along the lino of coast, within fivo chains of high water mark, to lay thoir pormanont way. Tho admitted fact of tho uncertain nature of tho prosont steamboat communication between tho two towns being wholly inadequate to meet tho requirements of tho district generally, has boon ono groat" inducomont in bringing this company into cxistonco: tho steamboats can only servo tho wants of tho two points of arrival and departure, whoreas this company will convoy passengers and carry goods along tho whole lino at a greatly reduced tariff of charges than can possibly bo performed by tho present modes of communication, and will theroby reduce the rates of froight to much less than ono half thoso at present charged by tho packers from town, with an additional advantago in a saving of timo. Still, this Company "will not compote injuriously with tho packers, as thoy will still bo ro« quired to convoy goods from the various stations along the lino into tho interior, and also tho advantago of .being enabled to make two trips a day from Jany station to thoir points of delivery instead of only one, as at presont from town, 4 A und will also bo saved considerable timo now spent unnecossarily in dolays in town from various causes which would not thon ariso, On tho other hand, the Company will be in a position to compete successfully in overy way with the steamboats by thoir punctual and rogular communication-— freo from delays by floods, bars, or low tides— at all hours j and with a saving of timo— as they contemplate boing able to make tho through journey in ono hour. In addition thoy would also form a daily mail communication botween Hokitika, tho Grey, and intermediate places. Another advantago which tho Company will secure to tho public will bo tho safo transit of goods, freo from damage, compared with tho conveyance by sea. It is an authentic fact that great difficulty is experienced in obtaining redress from ocean going vessels for damago done to goods onboard, and in many cases sovoro losses aro sustainod by shippors of goods botwoen tho two centres ; and tho owners of such vossols generally succeed in boing exonerated from blame, howevor careless they may bo, from tho inability of tho suffororsto obtain proof of such carolossness, or their ignoranco of vessols boing unsoaworthy when shipping their goods. No such risks would occur on tliis Railway.
