Tho p.s. Bruco returned yesterday aftornoon from Okarita, bringing upwards of 3600 oz, of gold, and about 35 passengers. This favorite steamer left Hokitika on Thursday, 10th inst., for Okarita, with cargo and a fow possongors, having tho schooner Matilda in tow, with a full cargo. Sho crossed tho Hokitika Bar with hor charge safely, aud proceeded along the coast until off Wanganui, when a roporfc ran along tho deck of a man overboard, or missed from his -watch. Captain Korloy immediately took steps to ascertain which of tho seamen was missing, whon ifc was ascertained to bo a vory steady and activo man named John Gray. Cenjecturo only points to his having gono to the foro starboard sponson, aud from somo unforeseen circumstances, was missed when called to his watch at tho wheol. Ho was seen a short timo boforo by tho officor on watch, and tho man at tho wheol abaft tho steam chest, waiting to relievo him. Captain Kerley instituted every inquiry, but could not ascertain anything further than wo roport. Tho captain of tlio schooner Matilda, in tow of tho Bruce at tho time, heard tho sound of a man overboard ; and wo can only presume ho must havo fallen before tho paddles, and received somo serious dainago from contact with them. The Bruco arrivod off Okarita with the Matilda in tow, in timo for tido tho 11th instant. Sho then got ovor tho bar safely, and grounded on tho North Bank, tho Matilda following after ; tho latter vessol not answering her helm ran straight into "tho Bruco, doing hersolf considerable damage. Tho steamer remained aground a few minutes, and then steamed up tho river to her usual moorings. Tho violence of the concussion was such that the Matilda almost immediately filled and sank. Tho Matilda has been sold for the benefit of all concerned. Tho Bruc,o discharged cargo tho day of her arrival at Okarita, and next evening's tido towed tho ketch Pearl into harbor, and tho Three Brothers, from Dunedin, out 44 days, short of ftl provisions. Tho Bruco loft Okarita yesterday morning, 13th inst., and crossed tho bar with safety, arriving off Hokitika the samo day at 5 p.m. ; although low water, Captain Korley crossed the bar and landed tho passengers and gold alongside tho wharf boforo dusk. Tho Bruce leaves for tho Groy this morning at 9 a.m., and on her return will proceed again to Okarita with tho lona iv tow.

The performances of tho Bruco at Okarita havo been successful this trip, though not unattended without somo clangor to horsolf. Tho Fairy, although haying discharged all hallaßt, and taken in water casks for the purpose of filling up with water ballast outside, was taken in tow by tho Bruce, and part way out of tho river 5 but there not being sufliciont water (only five feet) tho Bruco had to cast off hor tow line, and leavo her for next tido. Captain Korley reports a vory narrow and Bhallow channel, and by no nicaus a favorablo l)laco to trado to at this season of tho year.
