SOLICITOR : H. E. CAMPBELL. SECRETARY : H. E. CAMPBELL. Temporary offices.— Mr Campbell's office, Rovell-stroot, This company is formed for tho purposo of laying a Railway along the line of coast between Hokitika and Groymouth, and intermediate places, as near to the present diggings as possible— namely, the Hau Hau, Arahura, Auckland, Toremakau, Waimoa Crcok, Saltwater River, and othors, for passenger and goods traffio. Tho promoters havo received from the Provincial Government an assuranco of support, and ovory encouragement that could bo expected in furtherance of their project. Tho Government havo also ongaged to givo them tho use 'of a sufficient portion of land along the lino of coast, within fivo chains of high water mark, to lay their pormanont way. Tho admitted fact of tho uncertain nature of tho prosent steamboat communication botwoon tho two towns boing wholly inadequate to moot tho requirements of the district generally, has been ono groat inducement in bringing this company into oxistonco: tho steamboats can only servo the wants of the two points of arrival and departure, whereas this company will convey passongors and cany goods along tho whole lino at a greatly reduced tariff of charges than can possibly bo performed by tho present modes of communication, and will thereby reduce the ratos of freight to much loss than one half thoso at prosent charged by tho packers from town, with an additional advantago in a saving of time. Still, this Company, "will not compote injuriously with tho packors, as thoy will still bo re* quired to convoy goods from tho various stations along tho lino into tho interior, and also tho advantage of ,being enabled to make two trips a day from [any station to thoir points of delivery instead of only one, as at present from town,'and will also bo saved considerable timo now spent unnecessarily in delays in town from va T , rious causes which would not thon arise, On tho othor hand, the Company will be in a position to competo successfully in ovory way with tho steamboats by their punctual and rogular communicationfree from delays by floods, bars, or low tidos— at all hours ; and with a saving of time — as thoy contomplato being ablo to make tho through journey in one hour. In addition thoy would also form a daily mail communication between Hokitika, tho Grey, and intermediate places. Another advantago which the Company will secure to tho public will bo tho safe transit of goods, frco from damago, compared with tho conveyance by soa. It is an authentic fact that great difficulty is experienced in obtaining redress from ocean going vossols for damago done to goods on board, and in many cases severe losses aro sustained by shippers of goods between tho two contres ; and the owners of such vessels generally succeed in boing exonerated from blamo, however caroloss thoy may bo, from tho inability of tho suffororsto obtain proof of such carelessness, or thoir ignoranco of vessels being unsoaworthy when shipping thoir goods. No such risks would occur on this Railway. Tho Company bind themselves to havo trucks and carriages (properly so. cured from tho offoots of bad weather or otherwiso, and no damago could arise, except from actual accidents which could not bo foreseen, Tho permanont way will bo laid subject to tho approval of tho Government Enginpor ; tho publio will thoroforo havo a ; guarantee that the works will bo constructed in a propor and substantial mannoi, Tho Committee proposo to oroct stations along tho lino at convenient dis« taucos, and at tlio noarost points to tho
