HOKITIKA HOSPITAL.
Dr. Riley, the Surgeon-Superinten-dent of the Hospital, has presented his monthly report of the state of that institution for April. Dr. Riley's reports were formerly communicated to us for publication, in accordance with the universal practice prevailing elsewhere, but under tho regulation laid down by Mr Commissioner Sale, these reports have now, together with other official documents, to be subjected to revision before they are allowed to see the light, lest, we presume, something not favorable or flattering to authority should leak out. We are permitted to use tho tabular statement supplied by Dr. Ryley, and an " extract" from his report as under. What the remainder of it contained that rendered it inexpedient to hand the report in its integrity to the press for publication, can only be a matter of conjecture. Probably veiy little of any importance. But wherever authority steps in to "supervise" offloial documents and suppress portions of them, there is always room for suspicion that it has been found necessary to keep back something very damaging.
