SOLICITOR ; H. E. CAMPBELL. SECRETARY : 11. E. CAMPBELL. Tomporary offices. — Mr Campbell's office, Rovell-street. I This company is formed for tho purpose of laying a Railway along tho lino of coast botwoon Holdtika and Groymouth, and intermediate places, as near to tho present diggings as possiblo — namely, tho Hau Hau, Araliura, Auckland, Tcromakau, Waimoa Crook, Saltwater Rivor, and othors, for passongor and goods traffic Tho promotors havo received from tho Provincial Government an assurauco of thoir support, and ovory encouragement that could bo [expected in furtherance of their project, and havo ongagod to givo them tho uso of a sufficient portion of land along tho lino of coast, within fivo chains of high water mark, to lay their pormanont way. Tho admitted fact of tho uncertain nature of tho present stoamboat communication botween tho two towns boing wholly inadequate to meet tho requirements of tho district generally, has been ono groat inducement in bringing tliis company into oxistenco: tho steamboats can only servo tho wants of thoYsvo points of arrival and departure, whoVeas this company will convey passongorsjand carry goods along tho whole lino at a greatly reduced tariff of charges than can possibly bo performed by tho present modes of communication, and will thereby r oduatos of freight to much less than ono half thoso at present charged by tho packers from town, with an additional advantago in a saving of timo. Still, this Company will not compoto injuriously with tho packors, as thoy will still be required to convoy goods from tho various stations along tho lino into tho interior, and also tho advantago of ,'boing enabled to make two trips a day from [any station to their points of delivory instead of only ono, as at present from town,~and will also bo saved considerable timo now spout unnecessarily in dolays in town from various causes which would not then ariso, On tho other hand, tho Company will bo in a position to compoto successfully in ovory way with tho steamboats by thoir punctual and regular communication-" freo from delays by floods, bars, or low tides — at all hours ; and with a saving of time— as thoy contemplate boing able to make tho through journey in ono hour. In addition thoy would also form a daily mail communication between Hokitika, tho Grey, and intermediate placos. Anothor advantago which tho Company will sccuro to tho public will bo tho safe transit of goods, freo from damage, compared with tho convoyanco by soa. It is an authontic fact that great difficulty is experienced in obtaining redress from ocean going vessels for damago dono to goods onboard, and in many casos severe losses aro sustained by shippers of goods botween tho two centres 5 and tho owners of such vessels generally succeed in boing exonerated from blamo, howovor careless they may bo, from tho inability of tho sufforors to obtain proof of such carolcssness, or their ignoranco of vessels being unscaworthy when shipping thoir goods. No such risks would occur on this Railway. Tho Company bind thomsolvos to havo trucks and carriages [properly socured from tho offects of bad weathor o r otherwise, and no damago could ariso, except from actual accidonts which could not bo foreseen, Tho permanent way will bo laid subject to tho approval of tho Government Engineer ; tho public will thoroforo havo a guarantco that tho works will bo constructed in a proper and substantial maunor, Tho Comnuttoo proposo to erect stations along tho lino at convenient distance^ and at tho noarosfc pouits to tho
