The boiler is multi-tubular ; tho shell is of best Staffordshire plate, and tho firobox all of Low Moor iron ; tho tubes aro wrought iron, well disposed for strongth, and with amplo spaco for tho circulation of water, and tho settling of sediment ; the ash pan fits closely to tho bottom of fire-box, and has a flap-door attached to regulate the draught. Tho appendages compriso second lock-up safety valvo, steamo pressure guago and signal whistle, steam indicator, glass-water guago, guago cock, blow-off cock, &c. Tho boiler is clothed with hair felt, lagged with wood, and cased with sheet iron, and its capacityis larger than usual for tho nominal power of the engine. * Tho working parts of tho engine aro arranged with much simplicity on tho top of tho boilor, where they can bo well socn and easily got at by an attendant. By an improved self-contained, arrangement of cylinder and steam chest, access can bo had to tho slide, throttle, and stop-valves, by simply taking off tho steam-chest lid. Tho cylindor is also covered with hair felt, wood and sheet iron, in tho samo way as the boiler, and fitted with connected blow-off cocks and grease cups. Tho piston is metallic, and of improved construction, and has a stool piston rod ; tho slido bars and valvo rods aro also of steel, The crank shaft is made of tho best scrap iron of tho locomotive form, and of sufficient length to carry a fly-wheel at ono end, and a pulley at tho other, so that tho machinery can bo driven from either sido of tho engino, or both sides at tho samo time. Tho fly-wheel is turned on its periphery, and being accurately countorvroightcdj'longitudinal vibration of tho engino is prevented, which, when it occurs, not only increasos wear and tear, but is a frequent causo of tho driving strap running off. Provision is mado for reversing tho motion of tho engine by a simplo adjustment of the slido valvo cccontric, and the speed is regulated by a direct-acting governor. A forco pump, driven vertically from tho crank shaft, is attached to tho boiler for supplying it with water ; but a Gifford's injector cau bo applied instead if required. AH pins, eyes, and nuts, aro case hardened ; and self-acting lubricators, wrought out of tho solid material, are fitted to the journals and slides. This engine is fitted with a complcto set of case-hardoncdJJuimmers, firing tools, funnel, tube, brush, oil feeder, sparo guaare glass, sparo fusible plug, and a waterproof cover, and furnished with check chains, ock chains, shoo and chain. This engino has been tested under steam at a high pressure beforo it left tho works. Tho power is calculated at 351bs prossuro of steam in tho boiler, but it may be safely worked at GOlbs pressuro (the boilerplates being of extra strongth, and thoroughly well stayed) at which it would givo off double its nominal power.
