DEPUTATION TO THE COMMISSIONER.

The deputation appointed at a publio meeting of tho storekeepers and miners of the Three Mile, to wait upon Mr Sale, with a view of urging upon him the urgent necessity of constructing a track from Hokitika to the above goldfield, by the most direct and shortest route, had an interview with the Commissioner on Monday, 7th instant, at 3 p.m The deputation, consisting of Messrs. Edward James, Thomas Hood, J. P. Waito, and — - Spence, having been introduced by Mr E. Prosser, wh.6 explained the object of the meeting, stated that it was the desiro of the storekeepers and miners to have the track cut from Hokitika direct to the diggings, as they believed the route proposed to bo taken by the Government via the Three Mile, would be at least a mile longer than the- direct line, and would entail considerably greater expense, delay, and risk in the transmis- , sion of merchandise, through having to send the goods, in tho first instance, by water, to the Kanieri, and thenoe by . packer, which would necessitate the establishment of depots for the recep- 1 tion and forwarding of merchandise at the latter place, which may be obviated by the direct pack track from Hokitika to the Three Mile. Mr Salo having heard the arguments of the deputation, promised them that,' , although he believed the track from the Kanieri to be" the best, yet be would instruct the Surveyor to report uponboth routes, and that if the one suggested by the deputation was found to be tho most advantageous to the district, he would endeavor to render them what assistance he could. The deputation having thanked Mr.' Sale for bis reception, withdrew. '
