Ab tho Star of tho Evening was tho first steamer to leave tho Hokitika wharf direct for Melbourne, so is sho the first to make tho return trip. Well pleased aro wo to see this smart ana handy tcssol once more safo at her moorings, and trust tho successful voyage sho has just completed is only tho forerunner of many others that will provo equally so. During her etay in Melbourne eho was on tho patent slip and both boilor and bottom underwent a thorough overhaul and woro well cleaned ; tho result of tho examination being most satisfactory, as all tho plates wero found perfectly sound, a fow only having started. These wore re-tightened and tho bottom coated with a new kind of composition invontod and patented by Messrs Charlesworth and Sharp of Melbourne. A patch of it was tried on the bottom of the South Australian and found to answer admirably, as when romoved not the slightest corrosion was perceptible in tho plate, and tho surface of tho coating was singularly free from marine incrustations. After filling up with cargo, and shipping somo forty passengers, the Star of the livening left Hobson's Bay, and cleared Port Philip Heads on tho 13th at 1 p.m., with strong east wind and fine weather. These she carried until tho 17th when the breeze hauled more to the south and held on thero for three days, then died away and gradually shifted to the west, and honco to the roadstead, which she reached at 10 p.m. on the 2lßt, light breezes and fair woathor prevailed. To the courtesy of Captain Turner wo are indebted for tho receipt of lato Melbourne files, containing most interesting Colonial and European intelligence, extracts from which will bo found elsewhere. Although vessels entering the river have to take a sharp turn round tho North Spit, tho channel otherwiso is in an excellent condition. Tho William Miskin, whon leaving yesterday, an hour before high water, sounded tho channel from end to end, and uowhore found' less than seven feet, the lead lino giving that depth on the tail of tho South Spit. On the top of high water tho Star of tho Evening came in, and, in her turn, kept tbe lead going, whon from two to fchree fathoms and a half wore found. The s.b. William Miskin sailed for Bluff Harbor and Dunedin yesterday afternoon, taking with her a little cargo and 35 passemgors. Her late stay has been tho' lougost sho ever made in Westland waters, and wo understand it has proved anything but as unprofitable one. Tho return of tho William Miskin na/ be expected in about a fortnight, when, we hear, that this smart boat will be porminenlly placed in the Weetland coasting fcftde, '
