BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.

(prom our own correspondent.) Christchttkoh, Saturday, 3.10 p,in. Arrived: The Rangatira, from the North. Tho Manawatu block has been purchased for £25,000. An outbreak of Hau Haus is anticipated at Wairea. The Governor is expected in Wellington. Great dissatisfaction exists here at the non-arrival of the writs of election. The Auckland, from the North, has arrived with the English mail.

A singular statement is mode in a Sydney telegram, contained in tlio Argus, to the offeofc that tho New Zealand Government had requested from the Governments of Victoria and New South Wales, the appointmont of Commissioners, to reorganise tho Civil Service in New Zealand, and to framo an Income-tax Bill. It is added that Mr W. _orster had already been appointed by thft latter Q-overn-inont. Mr Bartlett has kindly granted tho uso of the Prince of Wales Thoatro for the publio meeting to be held this afternoon. By tho Star of tho Evening wo havo complete flies #f Molbourne papers to tho 13th inst. Wo give various itonft of mail news not contained in our previous mossages. j and in consequence of tho pressure of these, and of intercolonial intelligence, are obliged to hold over nearly tho whole of our looal matter. Again do we oall the attoution of the authorities to tho necessity which exists that the Cattlo Trespass Ordiiiauee should be at onco extended to Hokitika, at that intolerable nuisance, stray horses, ia daily becoming more dangerous and unbearable. Not a day passes but droves of these playful, frisky brutes dash madly through tho streets, kicking «p their heels and otherwise conducting themselves in a manner calculated to cause intense terror in tho breasts of sobor-miuded, plodding citizens; and we aro only surprised that serious aecidonts havo not occurred. A pound is sadly needed, and if one is not soon provided we feel certain that, ere long, a coroner's jury will feel it then? duty to return a verdict of either man or woman slaughter against the Q-overnmment. The accounts from tho Hau Hau still continue most satisfactory and confirm those hitherto received from it. As a proof of ho\r rioh some of tho claims are, we may mention that on Friday last two men brought in 160 oz of gold, the proceeds of a fortnight's work. Several other heavy parcels have also been bought by tho banks. Mining on a most extensive scale is about to be commenced in the Maori Resorvo Woodstock. Messrs Boyan and party having taken a lease of 50 aores of ground from the Maoris for a period of 21 years, and Mr Mackio the Maori Commissioner has given his aaßent to the transaction. Wo believe it is tho intention of tho above party to introduce steam machinery at once, fts the ground is exceedingly wet. A new literary " Year Book," on the plan of Vapereau, has been started by Professor Gosche, of Halle. It is divided into two principal parts — the first containing popular essays on questions touching European literature ; the second, a systematic and critical survey of all tho literary events of the year. A new system has been adopted in Paris for enabling visitors to see at a glance what apartments are to let in the various districts. A register is to be hung up iv the hall of each mairio, giving this information, not only for the district in whioh the mairie happens to be, but also for the other districts.
