Thus, by two vessels alone, since the commencement of tho present month, nearly 60,000 ozs of gold will have been shipped for tho neighboring colonies, representing in value a sum not very far short of a quarter of a million sterling, tho produce of the Westland miners.
are compelled to hold over much local and other matter, in consoquonco of tlio press of advertisements. We nro happy to learn that tho Benefit given at tho Prince of Walos Opora Ilouso'on Wednesday evening, will result in a vory handsomo addition to tho fund raisod for tho widow and family of tho Into Mr Georgo Greenfield. Tho gross receipts at tlio thealro amounted to £160. Tho uso of tho house ,was given by Mr Uartlett, subject to tho defrayment tho bnro oxponscs incurred, which amount to £35. Other cxponsos woro incurred for printing, advertising, &c., amounting to £23. This will leavo a netfc sum of about £100 to bo handed over to tho Committee. Tho friends of tho deceased gortlemon aro indebted to Mr Bartlctfc for tho liborality of tho arrangements inado by him, by which tho Benefit was rendered a benafide and substantial one. With othor contributions, avo beliovo tlio funds at tho disposal of the Committee amount to upwards of £250 } and it is hoped that they will bo ; still furllior migmontcd. A lologram from Dimcclhi, in tho Lytlclton Times, announces tho failure of Messrs Do Carlo and Co., auctioneers 5 liabilities, £17,000. The Provincial Gazelle proclaims a portion of laud at the mouth of tlio Grey Rivor to bo a slaughtering yard. Constable Leary is gnzotted as Inspector of slaughter houses for the Greymouth district. Tho following list of poisons applying for relief under tho "Debtors and Creditors Act," in tho Westland distriot appears in tho Gazette :— Benj. Lyons and Albert Prince, lato of Greymouth, merchants]; on tho petition of James Clark, merchant, Hokilika, trading with others as ' ' J. L. 0. Burke & Co," and on their own petitions tho following :— Rudolph Mooller, draper, Hokitika ; Joseph Harding, hotolkeoper, Hokitika; Edward Hankins,; journalist, Hokitika 5 Robt. Walker, boot and shoe dealer, Hokitika 5 John Arkeil, accountant, jHokitika ; John Margetts, now in custody, [Hokitika ; and |William Meikle, Hokitika. Wo notice that Mr Georgo jWintor, who has for a considerable time discharged the duties of Acting Sub-Treasuror, lias been gazetted as SubTreaßurer at Hokitika, his appointment to date from tho Ist inst. This gentlomau formerly held tho office of Sub-Treasurer under tho Provinoial Government of Otago. Yesterday morning thojjdcad body of a man lying on tho oxtromo ond of tbo North Spit was discovered by a resident of Rovoll-strcct whilst ho was walking on tho beach. Tho polico wero at once communicated with, and tho body removed to tho Camp, whon upon soarohing it a minor's right was found, beariug tho name of James Wobb, and dated January 6th, 18G6. Itwns issued at Groymouth. From tho appoaranco of tho remains it is imagined that death must have ensued vory rccoutly as thoro aro no signs of decomposition or tho slightest decay. In all probability tho unfortunate man fell into the rivor yostorday, possibly at tho Kaniori, as from his dress ho was evidently a minor, and tho frosh must havo carried him down to whore his romains woro found. Ho appears to havo beon about forty yeara of ago, with light comploxion, sandy hair and long noso. An inquest will bo hold upon tho body to-day at tho St. La-wronco Hotel, Camp-street. A doputation from tho inhabitants of North RovcH street— consisting of tho Eov. Father M'Girr, Messrs Robinson, Jones, and M'Carthy— waited on Mr Salo yesterday afternoon, to submit to him cortain- quostions rolativo to tho wolfaro of that portion of tho town and its inhabitants. Tho first matter discussed was tho salo of town lands, the deputation requesting that certain parts of Revell-Blrcet not disposed of at tho lato^alo
should bo submitted to tho public according to tho provisions laid down in tlio 29th clauso, 6th section of tho Land Regulations. Mr Sido stated that thoir request coidd not bo compliod with, us it had been dcoidod to dispose of tho land ut so much a foot, according to tho depth of tlio section, and that a bill to loguliso tho salo on thoso terms would be submitted to tho General Assombly in Juno noxt. Mr Robinson requested to bo ' informed whether, if tho Superintendent woro petitioned, and a deposit of ton pov cent paid upon tho upsot price of sections, thoso sections would bo sold by auction. Mr Salo answered that tho superintendent would not bo compelled Id accodo to such a petition. The noxt matter cousidorcd was, tho necessity of extending tho drain through Tailored ■ strcot further north, and tho formation of footpaths from tho Oddfellows Ilbtol northwards, whon Mr Salo informed tho doputation, that ns thoso sections between Haiupdcn and Stafford streots woro unsold> tho Government would subsidise any amount tho inhabitants might subscribe for tho abovo impvovomonts between thoao Btrcots by an equal sum. But as tho ground north of Uampdon strcot was freehold proporty, tho expense of such improvements thoro must bo dofrayed by tho occupiers or holders of sections. Mr Salo was then askod whether tho Government had power to proclaim certain unoccupied sections, in Rovcll stroot, right-of-ways, as it was of tho utmost importanco thero should bo oponings from tho main street to tho beach, ospeoially in tho ovont of flro. Mr Salo replied, that the Government not only had tho power, but intended to uso it, aud removo certain house's, which woro at prosont occupying silos peculiarly suited for right-of-ways. Tlio doputation urged upon Mr Snlo tho necessity of constructing public urinals, &c, in difi'cront parts of tho town 5 but that gentleman stated that thoy wore purely municipal matters, and that tho Govornmonl had not tho powor to interfere. After thanking Mr Salo for his courtesy, tho deputation withdraw. The "Printers 1 Register," a journal published in London, and devoted to the interest of the trade, contains a well-written paper on the " Colonial Press," from which tho following is an extraot :— " On tho wholo a fow speoimens before us give us a very favorablo idea of tho talent, energy, wit, and wisdom, of the colonial press, Some of them are fully equal to papors bearing similar names of established celobrity in London. Their material aspect is also sufficient, if nob of the best. Paper, type, ink, and printing, appear to bo of average quality as compared with tho average of our own newspapers. They appear also to flourish in advertisements. Whon wo regard tho rapid growth in numbers, and tho equally romarkablo improvement in tho quality of tho colonial prices, wo look forward hopefully towards tho future . . Tho combination of vigorous thought, clear expression, and apt illustration, with duo regard to truth, fair-play, aud courtesy, whon directed by ability and enterprise, will win its way through all difficulties, and prove a commercial, as well as political success, and while it benefits tho proprietary, who havo tho wisdom to omploy such agoncies, cannot fail also to benefit tho colonies."
