AMUSEMENTS.
The providm hitherto made for /the public entertainment of the residents 'in Hokitika, has consisted entirely oficoncerts, character impersonations^ aoto*batic feats, " Wizards' " performances, and the like, given in the large .halls -or saloons attached to several of the'principal hotels. Amongst the -recent visitors whd have ministered to our amusement were Miss Edith Palmerston,,ihe Magician Jacobs, Miss Wiuterbourne, and others. Mr Barlow, the celebrated vocalist and nigger delineator, isat present performing at tho Corinthian Hall, and Miss Rosa Cooper, a very popular colonial actress, is announced to appear at the Shakspcre Hotel. v r < ' We are looking forward, however, to the introduction of public entertainments of a higher class. The: new Prince, of Vales Theatre is rapidly, approaching completion. Itisanoblcstructure, and, for theatrical purposes, very perfect in its appointments. I#-is built to accommodate an audience of t some fourteen hundred persons, The part; of the house appropriated to public use is most commodious, and the stage is sufficiently broad and deep to enable the most imposing scenic effects to be produced. Atf ached to the Theatre are, a vestibule, club, reading, coffee, and billiard rooms'; and when finished the building will vie with any in the. Australian Colonies. Thespiritedjproprietors to whom the community are indebted for this addition, not only to the public edifices of the town, but to the resources of amusement, are Messrs. Moon and Bartlott, formerly of Sydney, whose intention it is to produce a succession or nlgndass~aramas~ancl "other entertainments suitable for the stage. ,Itjs understood that the house will be opened - to the publicon Wednesday next although the decorations, lighting, apparatus, &c, are far from being complete; , Tb^e very clever Lenton troupe of acrobats are, however, about, to visit Hokitika, and tho proprietors of the Theatre, avail themselves of the opportunity, glider suoh circumstances of disadvantage as they may, of enabling the publ^c^to witness their performances.
