CHRISTCHURCH.

The Press of the 17th reports: —

Bnainesi moves on steadily, and 'he markets are free from any sudden fluctuation, either of an upward or downward tendency ; g«ods are absorbed quietly in the current requirements of trade. and sales are not pushed in any manner likely to be injurious. A large Rale was held during the week by Mr Ollivkr, at the residence of Mr B Wilkin (who is leaving for England). All the lots were cleared at satisfactory prices ; the sale being numerously attended and competition more than ordinarily brisk. The Saturday market was well attended^by country people, and numerous samples of grain were shown, and wheat is offered freely ; but many samples are of an inferior quality owing' to iho wet harvest weather, although tome aro very fine, and evidence great care on the part of the grower. A few medium samples changed hands at 6s per bushel. Very little barley was exhibited ; ordinary quality sold from ss, and fine chevalier at 6s per bushel of 52 lbs— the weight which the misters now buy at. Oa s are enquired for in small lots, 8s 6d being freely given for imme diate delivery. In hay the market is firm at L 4 10s per ton delivered.

Flour, bran, and sharps are stationary at last week's quotations, and it is understood that the opening price of new flour is settled at LI 9 10s per ton.

Horses are difficult of sale, very few being quitted at the market sales. Ca tie are also much cheaper than thpy were a short time hack Milch cows range from LlO to LI 5 each for ordinary quality, but flue animals find pur* chasers at higher rates.
