We are glad to hear the Smr of the Evening is likely to be soon removed from her position on the Grey bar into the river. Captain 'A'hitwell ot the Kennedy informed us that she is in anything but a bad position, having gone on shore on the South instead of the North Spit, as reported by us in Monday'u issue, and that •he was gradually washing across it. Part of her cargo has been discharged lo lighten her, and as goon as a purchase could be got ready, it was expected she would easily heave off, as even now fcbjf.was slowly forging ahead with the scud of the sefti • ' The P.N.Z. & A.It.M. Co.'s s.s. Claud Hamilton, Gordon Ponsonby, Commander, left Melbourne at 8 p.m. on the Bth insfc., and after a smart run of 5 days 11 hours camo to an anchor off the liar at 11 n.m. on tlje 14th. During tho early part of the passago thick haiy weathor and light, winds prevailed, but since the 11th strong breezes from N. to S.W. and clear weather. This fine stonmcr, which for tome month* putt has been a regular trader to the port, lias again made nn excolleut passage from Australia, fully maintaining tho reputation she has oarneel sinco tho now boilers wero put on board her, and other improvements effeotod in her machinery. Tho Sasiago she made a fow months ngo of four aya and a half from Sydney to this pork will Jong bo remembered to her credit, and her subsoquont trips incontestibly provo her right to bo considered ,ono of tho fastest bonts in tho • Company's fleet. She brings 140 passongers and a small cargo. Tho s.s. Wonga Wongo, Mundlo, Commander, left Wellington on the Btli inst. at 3 p.m. and arrivod nt Nelson at G n.m. on tho 9th. Sho left Nolson at 3 p.m. on tlio 12th, arriving at Hokitika Wharf; on the 14th at 8 p.m. During tho whole passago lujht west and uouth west winds, attended with fine weather, prevailed. Tho Wonga Wonga brings 1 horso, 140 sheep, 11 pigs and about 10 tons general cargo to tho Port. The p.s. Ballnrat loft Uokitika in company ■ with the Barwon, s.s., for Groymouth on tho 18th, at 9 a.m., and arrived tlioro about nooj. When tho tide sowed sho crossed tho b.ir and shipped 12,000 ozs of gold, a number of passengers, mails, &0., .which sho transferred sufoly to tho largo boai, outside,, nud again ran iuto the rivor that night. Early noxt morning she hauled alongside the coal depot and filled" her bunkers and then loft tho rivor for Hokitika, arriving safely at the wharf at evening tide "When about four miles from the Grey bar, ( on her return trip, eho observed tho funnel of the p.s. Yarra go ovor tho side, and fearing something serious had occurred, tit once ran back and proffered assistance. Fortunately, howoyor, it was not roquircd, no part of her machinery being damaged, tho funnel only haviug carried away. Captain Qtinnco reports that on Tuesday, a boat containing fivo men, in attempting to cross the Groy bar, was swamped, and one of thoir number, a "man named Mat how PrabbJo drowned. The remaining four were picked up by a bont dispatched to their assistance from tho s.s. Gothenburg. They woro muoh exhausted, having remained in tho water for nearly an hour. He also reports tha Star of tho' Evening as still on the South Spit, but close to the channel, and that thero was every likelihood sho would bo got off yesterday without damage. We are informed by Mr Greor that it his intontion, on Mmiday noxt, to despatch tho steamer Bruce on a longor trip to tho southward than she usually makes. After calling at Okarita sho will proceed to Bluo River, a port that has never yet been visited by any vessel j and from thenco she will run on to Jackson's, Bay. Mr Grcer says that he is induced to send tho Bruce on the above trip ' because he has been informed [there is very promising country in tho vicinity of Bluo Stiver, aud that thero are many miners merely waiting for a vessel to call in th,oro to proceed in her for tho purposo of giving it a trial. The harbor of Blue Kivcr is described as being one of tho beet on tho coast, and tho country round it as possessing every appearance of an auriferous nature. We cortainly think this enterprise on the part of the owner of tho Bruce is highly commendable, and trußt the South country will yet fulfil the oxpeotatfons f&rmedpfft, r f
