The Public Works department has received five more designs from Melbourne and Sydney for the proposed new building for the post and telegraph offices. They had been detained at the Port through some omission. Mauritius papers to hand, in oom-' paring their new mail service with the performances of tho 1?. and 0. Company, show that tho new company performs the service in some cases in days less time than the P. and O. Company did during the previous year. Thero is some probability of Dr Backhouse, who is shortly expected out from England, being appointed Roman Catholic Bishop of Adelaide. In the Assembly to-night the Government succeeded in negativing the motion to refer tho question of pastoral leases to a select committee. Wednesday, Jan. 31. A telegram* from Swan-hill says that heavy floods are coining down tho River Darling. A discovery of gold has been made in the southern dUtriot. The second payments for the Adelaide Cup, to bo run in April, muat be made on Thursday evening. A sale of wheat is reported to-day at 8s 3d. * Thursday, Feb. 1. The Aldinga, s.s., sailed for Melbourne, at five o'clock, with tho ministers of the Wesleyan Conference on board as passengers. Sales were effected to-day of Cape barloy at 5s 7d per bushel, and of Cape oats at 7s per bushel. t Tho Flying Buck arrived to-day, from Newcastle, having made the run in eight days. A new market lias been opened for our produce. The Oryx cleared out foxNew York to-day with a very large car^o of wool and copper. Ihe census will be taken here on the 26th of March. Friday Feb. 2. News from Lake Hope states that the natives had disappeared. Two po« lice troopers had arrived. Heavy rains prevailed up there, and alsd in* the far north. Mr Elder's camels had been stopped by the rains. A sale of wheat at 8s 2£d is reported. Wheat is Rtill withheld. There is no alteration in flour. The Assembly have voted £1000 towards supplementing the efforts of the corporation to dam the Torrens, and thus form a lake near Adelaide. A considerable portion of the capital of the new theatre company has been subscribed. -- The White Eaglo takes 3,000 sheep to Western Australia, the property of three large northern squatters, who, owing to losses, leave tho colony. Monday, Feb. 5. There is considerably more wheat in. the market. One parcel was sold at 8s 0 £d ? Export orders are limited to Bs. There is no enquiry for flour at £19 10s "to £20 10s. Tuesday, Feb. 6. It is proposed by the proprietor to form a company to enlarge and improve the Victoria Theatre. The theatrical season opens in March. Sale of wheat at 8s to 8s £d are reported ; but holders generally ask more than buyers will give. Flour is neglected. Country, £19 5s to £19 10s : town, £20 to £20 10s. Should the Ellen Lewis not arrive from the Northern Territory within tho next fow days, another vessel will bo despatched.. The ruling of the Speaker of the Assembly, throwing out the votes of the squatter members on the Waste Lands. Bill, has been rejected by a majority of eight. Leichardt says, in his last letter, that he intended to make for the north end of Stuart's Desert. Tho »' Adelaide Register" to-day expresses its opinion that His Excellency Sir Charles Darling's recent treatment of Mr M'Millan (in re Ecroyd v The Queen) will ensure his recall, if nothing else does. Heavy fires have occurred at Myponga; the telegraph poles are burnt near the square waterhole. A bridge is on fire at Compass. Wednesday, Feb. 7. A tender from the Australian Steam Navigation Company, Sydney, has been submitted to this Government, offering to perform the European mail service between Galle and Australia, at a less rate than that which the Peninsular and Oriental Company are receiving, provided that joint action is taken by tho Australian Governments. Last night, three armed men, with, masks on their faces, stopped and robbed a gentleman in the Adelaide Park lands. Next Wednesday (the 14th inst.) has been appointed as a day of humiliation and prayer by ministers ,of all denominations, on account of the drought. The man who represented himself as thn lieutenant of tho Shenandoah, has taken strychnine, and is in a dangerous state. It has been ascertained that he comes from Brisbane. At a meeting of tho Chamber of Commerce, notice haSjjJbeen given of a motion affirming the desirability of taking the management and improvement of tho port out of tho hands of the Government, aud placing it under a trust.
