Kennedy, Whitwell," commander, left Nelson at 7 p.m. on the Bth, bound to the Grey, where she arrived on tho 10th at 7 a.m. ■She discharged the greater part of her cargo there, and left for Hokitika on tho 18th nt 7.80 a.m. arriving safely at tho wharf at 9.20 p.m. She brings to the port a fow tons of cargo and 60 sheep. We are indebted to the courtesy of tho purser of the Keera for late Dunedin files, extracts from which will bo found in another column. The b.s. Keera, J. Joyce, commander, loft Port Chalmcra at 6 p.m on tho 7th instant with N.E. winds aud thick weather, and arrived at Lyttelton at 8 p.m. pn the Bth. She left the next day at 4 p.m, tho weather still remaining thick, but the brcezo had considerably increased, blowing vory fresh from N. to N.N.E. The entrance to the Straits was reached at 6 p.m, on the 10th, when through' being too early on tide, she brought up in Tory Sound, at 6 p.m on tho 10th. It was well she did so, for an hour or two after it came ou to blow heavily from the N.W., accompanied with Tory heavy rain. During the whole of the 11th it blew a hurricano, keeping lior to her anchor until tho noxt morning jfheu the weather having moderated she left, at 5 ft.in., and hence to Hokitika W. and S.W. winds and fine weather prevailed. She reached the wharf safely at 7 p.m. on the 13th, bringing a full general cargo to the port. Considering the unfavorable weather Bho encountered the Keera has made a smart passage from Dunedin. The run of 38 hours irom Lyttelton is especially good. The Keera will leave fov Duuedin on tho 1 5th instant, whero she will be placed on the patent slip, and receive a j thorough overhaul, aud have her bottom eltaned. The Hokitika bar is so associated with *\ beavy (and te boats) an impugnable surf, that an open boat venturing ontsido will, we daiway be received with incredulity by some, and surpriie by others. Keers would have remained in the roadstead all night, as the day was fast closing in when she arrived abreast the town. Capt. Turnbull, however determined sho should enter tho river, as there were many passengers to be seen on board, a considerable proportion of .whom wero ladies, so, with his usual energy, he mustered his boat's crew,^ind the break fortunately being very light, pushed out to tho rescue, reached the Kecra without mishap, and brought her in safely to the whavf. Wo certainly have occasion to rejoice at the continued favorable state of tho entrance. The channel to the N.W. is remarkably open, with a good depth of water in it, for no whore does the lead give less than two fathoms and a half.
Among its shipping intelligence, tho Melbourne lirg'us publishes a communication, dated 25th September last, from tho Peninsula nnd Oriental Stenm Navigation Company to the secretary of the Geneial Post Office, London, in explanation and defenco of the Company's failures to deliver the mails within (he contract time. The communication is in veply to a letter from the secretary to the General Post Office, calling attention to a despatch from tho Government of this colony, complaining of the manner in which the contract mail service is peifoimed between Ausiialia and Ceylon. In referring to the letter the Argus says tho Company have amply justified all that has been said to their disparagement. No testimony could be more conclusive than their own confession, and no condemnation could bo stronger than their own dofenco On four successive occasions they own the justice of their impeachment. Tho explanation begins in the February of last year, and between that date and July, twice thoßom* bay broke down and twice the Madras, on the Australian lino ; while tho next month's mails were delayed by the piston of the Golconda near Suez. This is the chapter of accidents for the for the first half year, over which their exculpation extends, and which could be materially eularged by the lapses of the second half. The noxt time they cpmlercend to make an apology, their task will not be so quickly done. They will have to explain how it was that the Jeddo WBS four days late in July, the Norllmua four days in August, the Madras eight days in September, tho Ellora nine days in November (the October mail being punctual), nnd tho Madras four days in December.
