The Isabella Jackson left Lyttelton on the 20th instant, with a light westerly wind, and arrived off Holdtitu on the 25th, towing over the bar same day. During the passage moderate breezes and fine weather prevailed. She brings a full general cargo to our port. Capt. Elmsley reports that when abreast of the EulW he fell in with, an immense quantity of drift ■wood, some of it very large timber. This would lead to the supposition that the river must have lately been visited by violent floods. '

« A Steel Snip in a Cvcloxk. — It has been said, with truth, that o:ie fact is worth many theories; and, therefore, it may be inteiesting to know what was the behaviour of a steel ship under trying cireumstancpf, particnlaily as the homogenous qualitifs of the steel plates used in shipbuilding have been called in question. < On Thursday night the clipper ship Clyteinnestra, Captain Stewart, belonging to iUew-rs Jones Palmer and Co., arrived in the Meipey, with a large cargo of jute, *c, after weathering the disastrous Calcutta cyclone. She is a steel-built vessel, three-eighth inch plntes, of 1250 tons register, launched by Messis Jone«, Qnisitin and Co., now the Liverpool Shipbuilding Company, in April, 1864, and next month left on her fir.st voyage to Calcutta. At the timp of the cyclone she was lying in the river at Calcutta, and encountered the full foice o£ the storm. The following brief account of the hurricaue is fiom the pen of the chief mate: — "The morning of October 5, 1864, commenced with strong wind.s and thick drizzling rain. Eight am. had gale and tremendous squalls, with thick constant rain. From Ba.ir.until noon gnle increasing, and barometer falling fast, with very threatening appearance. Two p.m. — Tremendous gale and most terrible squalls, with tlu'ck rain and dismal appearance. The shins attached to the same moorings bulow us break adrift, with sails blown from the yards, and topgallant masts gone. ITalf-past three p.m. — Hurricane at its height, blowing so terrifically hard that it was impossible to stand on deck without holding on. At this time our inshoro bower chain parted, our sails were all blown from the yards, and the topgallant mast went with the foretopmast. When the bower chain parted we swung our stem on to the gale, and held on for a few minutes, when, in a tremendous burst of wind, our stern chain parted, and away we drove across the river before wind and tide, at a frightful rate, smashing into several ships on our way. Finally, we were brought to a standstill on the opposite side of the river, and became a target for the one-half of the ships in Calcutta. One wooden ship driving up, struck upon our starboard quarter, walking i'ighl through the upper part of our stem, and raising the poop deck. Three or four ships were- constantly pitching into our main rigging, being all fast together, and smashing and tearing away at everything from thence forward. At half - past four p.m., two iron ships and one wooden one drove right into us abaft the fore rigging, carrying away chain plates and rails. One of their bowsprits struck the foremast, and, with a fearful crash, the foremast fell over the port side, almost burying a small vessel lhat was fast to us. The rigging of the foremast was totally gone. Some time before the mast went, it brose 'tween decks, tearing up the main deck, and breaking two beams. 5.30 p.m., wind abating very fasf, and barometer rising, with fine weather. Ship lying almost a total wreck." Captain Stewart calculates that, at one time or other during the cyclone, at least twenty ves-cls ran into them. The toughness of the plates was something astonishing. At one point abaft the foro-rigging the Clytemnestra was struck at the shear streak, with terrific force by an iion vessel, the (i!eu Roy, of over 1000 tons burthen, stem on The only effect was a comparatively slight dent in one of the plates, and not the slightest approach to a fracture. More forward, the continual hammering of several large vessels had beaten the bulwarks level with the deck which led to ihe fall of the foremast, by the removal of its suppoifci. The plates forming the bulwarks wore, however, so tenacious thai, they were prized bade to their origlnfu positjpn, «ud wrnle to do duty again without Hio i\jV, oi' » mAlw.
