Egmont, James Hayley, commander, left Dunedin on January 4th, calling at Lyttelwn, which she left on the 6th, Wellington on the Bth, Piclon on the Oth, and Nelson on tho 11th, arriving off Hokitika at 3.30 a.m. on the 13th. Fine weather was experienced throughout tht passage. The Egmont leaves for Duuedin, via intermediate ports, on the 17th instant. She brings about thirty tons of cargo for this port. N The p js. Bruce has again made a most succossful trip to Okarita. She left Hokitika on the 12th instant at 5 a.m., and after transhipping passengers into the Claud Hamilton, ateeted for Okarita, arriving off that port at 2 p.m The tide not serving, she came to for a few hours, and at 6. p.m. crossed the bar and' reached her original mooring-place in the river safely, re-. ' mtining there next day to discharge about fifty tons cargo she had on board. At 8 p.m. on the 13th she cut ofl, and, taking the lona schooner in tow, steered down the river, making her exit into op«n water without mishap, and with the lon* still in tow steered for Hokitika, arriving in, the roadstead at 4 a.m. on the 14th, and at the wharf at 7 a.m. During the run there and back the Bruce has experienced most favorable weather, calms prevailing throughout tho trip. Respecting the Star of the South, Captain Turnbull has informed us that on his arrival at North Port, Chalky Inlet, Captain Joyce and himself proceeded to hold a survey upon her. For this purpose steam was got up, and nt the top of high water tho vessel was run up high upon the beach, and as soon as the tide receded her bottom was examined. The details of the •urvey we are not permitted to publish until tlu> official report has been handed in to head quarters. This much, how«voi, we can say, the Star of the South, although badly injured, is anything but a hopeless wreck, her midship alone being damaged . The same tide sho was floated off again, and anchored in deep water, were she now remains, pending her sale by auction, she having been abandoned to the underwriters. The compartment, in whioh is situated the machinery, is uninjured, bo steam can be got up at any time should it be necessary to do 80, and although the whole of the cargo is lost through being bo much damaged, that contained in the fore coinpaitruent would, we are informed, have been saved, had it not been for the carelessness of tho engineer, who, though ordered to do so by Captain Joyce, neglected to close the communication cotks, tho result being ins flooding of the fore part of the vessel as well. After surveying the steemer Captain Turnbull proceeded to search for the' rock that brought her td grief, and which is not down on any chart. Its' position was soon ascertained, and a aurrey made of it, when it was found to lie in Return Channel, a short cable's long h outaide Stokes Rock, there being apundauce of 'water between them, the lead-line giving six', ■even, eight, nine' and ten fathom*, whilst between it and iho shore five, six and goven fathoms of w»tor were found . The top of the rock is about ten feet square, the sides going sheer down, five fathoms being found close to it, There it about eight feet water upon it at low tide ; hence its peculiar danger to thippinu, no decided "break' 1 being peroopMUe upon it nt •nytiwe, For tlietliiM being, t!>s W n« of tho
The feais entertained for the safety of the s.s. Lioness are happily unfounded, that most useful vessel having been rescued from her perilous poiition on tho Grey bar, not the slightest injury resulting to her. In consequence however of tho impassable stato of tho Grey entrance she is at present a prisoner in tho river, and will remain so until tho channel again clears.
