Our smart little harbor, boat, the p.s, Bruce, left Hokitika bound to Okaritn, on Wednesday evening, the .3rd inst., with cargo And pnsxengere. She crossed the bar, safely, but hardly cleared the " break" when it commenced blowing from the N.W., accompanied with heavy rain, and very thick weather, which induced her to make a good offing before heading to the southward . vAt 5 a .m, on the 4th sighted Abut Head, bearing S.B distant ftboufc one mile, but the weather still continuing thick, sho stood out to sea again. At 11 a.m. the wind hauled to the southward, and the mist clearing off she ran into Okarita, and crossed the bar safely, tho lead-ljne giving two fathoms and a-half of wa'er upon it. Laid in Oknrita twenty-five hours, dis. charging cargo, ftnd left for Hokitika on Friday, the sih irst., at 2 p.m., with fine weather and light breezes, arriving ut tl^e liar at 6.30 p.m., thus making the run of fifty hiiles'iu four hours and a hilf . The Bnue behaved remarkably well in the heavy gale that prevailed during her downward trip, shipping no water, although ' a high cross sea was running. Sho brings passen. gcrs, and 1000 ozs of gold. We understand it is ihe intention of the agents to placo her permanently in tho Okarita trade, .should sufficient inducement offer*. Tho P.N.ZAS.N. Company's s.s. Rangitoto left Nelson at 12.30 p m., on the 6th hist, and after a splendid run of twenty-four hours arrived safely at Hokitika at f2.3.0 p.m. on the 7th. During the passage she experienced strong head winds, with a sraart.jmnp of a sea on Sho reports the steamers Thane and Wonga Wonga ns on their way down here, having passed them both shortly after leaving Nelson. The Rangicoto •will leave for Melbourne to-morrow, and may bo expected to return about the 29th inst. The brigantine William left Sydney on Christmas day, bound to this port with a cargo of cattle and sheep. She had hardly cleared the land when it commenced blowing from the S.E., compelling her to reduce sail to close- reefed fore and aft canvas, and fore-tops.iil, under which she head-reacbed for three days. This blow being accompanied by a very heavy sea, caused her to labor heavily, resulting in the doath of fifteen bullocks out of this twenty-four sho had on board. On tho 29th, tho gale abating, made sail, making land off the Grey on tho 4th inst. A strong northerly set nn4- light variable winds kept her iv tho offing until the 7th iust., when she anchored in the roadstead, being towed to the wharf the same day by the ' Yarra She brings 125 sheep, in good condition, and the remainder of the cattle are, considering her rou«h passage, well up in flesll. v • The brigantino Dart hauled, out of tho tier yesterday, and was^diopped down the river by the Yarra to a poinfhbreast where the boilers of the Maid of Yarra and New Zealand arc lying, for the purpose of taking them on board, for which every preparation has been made by enlarging her hatchways, rigging purchases, &c It is expected this will be accomplished in the course of next week, when she will leave direct for Mcl bourne. The schooner J. B. Russell left Qhrlstchureh on the 28tb ult. with north-east-winds and fine •weather, which continued to the' '3oth, when she fell in with a heavy gale from the north-west, compelling her to run for shelter to Port Underwood, where she brought up tho snme day. The breeze moderating, left ngain next morning, carrying fine weather and light, winds from west to north-east, until off Cape Pqulwind, when sho met with a sneezer from tho south west, which hove ber to for a few hours on the 4th inst. Thenca to the "roadstead light variable weather prevailed and a strong northerly se*. which kept her outside until the 7th, when she was towed over the bar by the Yarra. The J. B. Russell brings ft full general cargo to our port. Intelligence has been received in Sydney that the A.S ff. Co.'b B.r. Boomerang had struck on a rock off the Fitzroy river, and was making water. : — «.
