LATE ENGLISH NEWS. (VIA MAURITIUS.)
[The following was in typo before tho arrival of tho telegraphic summary of Mail news.] The Sydney Morning Herald of 15th instant gives a telegraphic report from its correspondent in Melbourne, at which port the Pactole from the Mauritius had arrived the previous day. The news is not so late as tho telegraphic intelligence we published on 28th tilt., which came down to the 12lli October from London j but it gives some particulars which arc not noticed in the telegrams,. Tho Pactole, from Mauritius, brings English news to October 3rd. Tho revenue returns for tho quarter are highly satisfactory. Tho Royal Commission upon the grievances of India have reported that tho concessions made by Sir Charles Wood were insufficient. It is rumoured that Sir Charles intends to resign. Five Fenian prisoners have been committed for trial, Tho evidenco discloses ji wide-spread conspiracy, which is largely sustained by aid from America.* Army waggons aro said to bo constructing in largo numbers in New York for the Fenian organisations. Numerous meetings of Fenians are being held throughout the country. Constance Kent, under sentence for tho murder of her brother, has been removed to Millbank. Alderman Phillips wns elected Lord Mayor of London.
The Countess of Paris has given birth to a daughter. The demolition of houses in tho city, to mako sprtco for new railways, has produced much consternation and complaint among the poorer inhabitants.' Sir Robert Peel was summoned before the Dublin magistrates for violent conduct in a railway carriage. Mont Blanc was recently ascended by a lady. A disease, resembling farcy in horses, has broken out amongst tho cattle in Ireland. Horses, also, have been fatally attacked in England. The Popo has pronounced censuro on all secret societies, including the Fenians and Freemasons, and threatens to excommunicate tho latter. Yellow fever is reported to have appeared in Swansea. Cholera is reported at Southampton. Consols, for money, 88| to 89 ; ditto, account, 89| to 89i The, Bank of England rate of discount has advanced to 5 per cent. Money market steady. Stock markots dull. Produce markets continue to improve. Tea firm, sugar active, rice firm, saltpetre steady. Coffee — Plantation, Coylon, middling, 81s; good middling, 83s to 975 ; fine middling, 89s to 925, markets steady. Cocoanut oil, Ceylon, L 47 1 0s ; Cochin, L6O. Liverpool. — Cotton — middling New Orleans, 24d; fair brooch, 17d; fair "dhollera," 17d. Marked excited. Manchester Market. — Grey shirtings, 40-inch, 71bs, 15s; 8& lbs, 16s ; "Madapollams, 32-inch, 3lbs, 6s 3d; mule twist, No. 40, best seconds, 26|d. Market fiim. The London Corn market is flat, owing to contiimed fine weather. President Johnson, it is believed, will shortly proclaim amnesty to tho South. Tho opposition of the Republican party to Johnson increases in intensity. Impeachment is talked of. Tho United States Government officially decline to bo responsible for tho Confederate debt. The Alabama Construction Convention repudiates the Confederate Statedebt. It is asserted that Austria has agreed, for n sum of money, to Annexation by Pyussia of Schleswig and Holstoin. Paraguayian invasion of Brazil is supposed to be abandoned, owing to a decisive victory obtained ijy Flores. Cardinal Andrea has published a letter expressing a desire to see Vcnetia annexed to Italy, and tho Pope reconciled to Victor Emmanuel. Juarez is said to havo left Mexico for New York, where he hopes to fcccurc means of resuming operations. Other accounts discredit this. ' * OBITUARY. J, F.
