A LL the Headlands between tho Rivers Wanganui and Okarita should bo approached with great caution in • fine weather, as tho rocks apparently run a considerable distance out to seaward* Tho lagoon, commonly known as the Okarita, is situate about 30 miles to tho southward of tho Wanganui ; tho coast, line for 6 miles to the north is a low sandy bank, covered with coarse grass and flax ; whereas about half a milo. to tho southward of the entrance there is a high rocky headland (Hohuhamaru), from which a foul bottom apparently extends some distance in a north-westerly direction. The river Okarita empties itself into the eastern side of this extensivo lagoon, into which tho sea flows and obbs with great velocity, fdrming a regular tidal harbor, almost entirely free from any fresh. The present channel ovor tho bar runs N.W. and S.E., with a depth of 14 feot, high water, spring tides ; the flood continues to run in for one hour after it is high water in tho offing. High water, full and change 11.20;' rise and fall about 9 feet. Vessels entoring should keep well ovor ■to tho south shore until abroast the north spit, whon they ought to stand straight across for tho opposito side to avoid tho current sweeping them upon a middle shingle bank ; — this turn in the channelis not moro than 200 foot in ridth at low water, and renders the Okarita' unfit for vossels of a great longth to entor. A quarter of a mile from tho entrance the channel is divided, by an island, into two branches, the northern one being navigable for nearly two miles, with an avcrago depth of from four to six feet at low water ; whilo the southern arm has the same depth of water, to a distance of about the eighth of a milo only. There is very bad holding ground ; so masters' of vossels cannot trust thoir anchors and cables, if moored in tho tidoway. Fbedk. D. Gibson, Port Officer.
