OKABITA BAR. A LL tho Headlands betwoon the Rivers Wanganui and Okarita should be approached with groat caution in fino weather, as tho rocks apparently run a considerable distance out to seaward, Tho lagoon, commonly known as tho Okarita, is situato about 30 miles to the southward of tho Wanganui ; tho coast line for 6 miles to tho north is a low sandy bank, covered with coarse grass and flax ; whereas about half a mile to tho southward of tho entranco there is a high rocky headland (Ilohuhamaru), from which a foul bottom apparently extends somo distance in a north-westerly direction. Tho river Okarita empties itself into tho eastern side of this extensive lagoon, into which tho sea flows and obbs with groat velocity, forming a regular tidal harbor, almost entirely free from any fresh. Tho present channel ovor tho bar runs N.W. and S.E., with a depth of 14 feet, high water, spring tides ; tho flood contimies to run in for ono hour after it is high wator in tho offing. High wator, full and change 11.20; rise and fall about 9 feet. , Vossols entering should keep well over to the south shoro until abreast the north spit, whon thoy ought to stand straight across for tho opposito side to avoid tho current sweeping them . upon a middle shingle bank ; — this turn in tho channel is not more than 200 feet in width at low water, and renders tho Okarita unfit for vessels of a groat length to enter. A quarter of a milo from the entrance tho channel is divided, by an island, into two branches, the northern ono being navigablo for nearly two miles, with an average depth of from four to six foot at low wator ; while tho southern arm has the same depth of water, to a distance of about the eighth of a milo only. There is very bad holding ground ; so masters of vessels cannot trust thoir anchors and cables, if moored in the tideway. Fredk. D. Gibson, Port Officer. Hokitika, December Bth, 1865. 257 HARBOR DEPARTMENT. NOTICE.—There will be an anchor and chain, and lino attached, on the South Spit, and boat and boat's crew in readiness at high water, every tide, to assist any vessel coming over tho bar. When the bar is only fit for steamers to take, a red flag will be hoisted on the north flagstaff. Whon for sailing vessels, a red flag and ball. Masters of vessels are particularly requested to attend to the small tidal flag ,on the spit, as the small tidal flag and tho large flag in ono takes them over the bar By order, THOMAS TURNBULL, 184 Harbor Master. NOTICE TO MARINERS AT THE GREY. rpHE outer flagstaff" has been disconX tinuod, and a skeleton beacon placed on tho beach, which in a lino with tho flagstaff, will cross the bar in tho deepest wator. Attention is 1 to bo paid, as herotoforo, to tho movomonts of the senio* phore. The lower mast has been boarded to seaward, showing a flat surface of 17 in., painted white to make it more conspicuous. The skoleton boacon is 15 ft' high above tho iippor part of the bank, and a flag-pole 6 ft. abovo that showing a red flag. The signals in use at the Grey are the same as those at tho port of Hokitika. Thomas Tuhnbull, 200 Harbor Master for Wostland.
