TO THE EDITOR OF THB WEST OOASI TIMES, Sir, — An inquest has been hold this day, by tho coroner Dr. Beswick, on the body of — Smith, when a verdict was returned of 1 Accidentally drowned." I enclose you a copy of a rider attached td the verdict. "The jury in giving their vordict are of 1 opinion that tho great loss of lives on the Tereraakau is owing to the neglect of the Government in not cutting a track along the bank of the river, and placing indicators at the different fords." A ruuoh stronger one by a former jury, liau been passed against the Government for allowing so many lives to be sacrificed without doing any thing to prevent it. People at a distance are led by the Canterbury press to believe that a good road is now. open from east to west. This is a fallacy. If this government road that has cost so much was of any benefit to the West Coast, how is it that all tile cattle are still brought via the Hurrunui arid Teretfakau f The fact ia, the interest of the West Coast ia sacrificed in order to get a direct road to Christchurch at the exponce of our revenue without any real benefit to us. Had the Government laid put L3OOO on tho Huruniii and Terennkau, a practicable road for cattle and sheep could have been made eight months ago. I am &c.| Cuaries Cameron.
