The galo dying away, variablo winds tho strong northerly current set the vessel as far north as tho Groy, nnd after beating about until tho 28th, she on tho morning of that day was towed into the river by tho Liones3. On tho 19th tho Susannah Booth spoko tho barque Itialto, twenty days out from Dunodin bound to Newcastle, N.S W. The Kennedy, s.s., left Kelson on tho 23rd instant. Heavy west and south. west weather drove her into Mutton B.vy for shelter, where she laid until 9 a.m. on tho 27th. Arriving off Cape Farewell tho gale blew up afresh, compelling her to anchor under the 100 of the spit until 10 p.m. She arrived in the rondstend at 1a m. on the 29th, and safely at the whnrf by 7. Tho Star of tho South, s.s., loft Dunedfn Heads on the 22nd inst. Thence to Wellington, at which port she anchored on tho 24th, strong west and south-west winds prevailed. Favourable winds and fine weather prevailed during the run noross, which she accomplished iv nino -days, sighting the coast of New Zealand, on tho 18111. Through a a succession of heavy W. nnd S.W. gales, she kept tho high sea until tho 25th, on which day sho came to an nnchor in tho roadstead, a light wind blowing off tho land at tho time. The weather, howcvei, suddenly changing, sho was caught nt her anchor by a strong westerly gale, accompanied by a heavy sea, nnd tho vessol being by the head mado bad weather of it, pitching bows under. . Tho Captnin prepared to run ; but while unshackling tho chain nt sixty fnthoms, she gnve a tremendous plunge shipping n heavy sea over hor bows. This torrillie strain was moro thnn the windlnss could bear, for it broke right in two on the port sido, and the whole of tho cable ran out to the clinch, seventy fathom.", of which, nnd the anchor was lost. The Willing Lass succeeding in gaining theoffing, and on tho 28th wns towed safely to tho wharf, by tho Lioness steam tug. The s.s. Wonga Wonga sailed from Wellington for this port on the 18th instant, at 4 p.m., a stiff westerly breeze blowing at tho time, which the dny after increased to a heavy gale that ohliged her to boar up for Crossolle's Harbor, whero she remained until tho 20th. At noon the weather moderating sho put to sea again, but was not under weigh two hours beforo tho galo pprung up with increased violence, driving hor into Totaranui for shelter in company with the s.p. Star of the Evening. Hero sho lay until tho 25th, making in the meantime two attempts to get to sea, but each timo was driven back by tho gale that blew with unabated violenco outsido. On tho 25th, being short of water and coal, sho ran into Nelson to fill up, tho Star of tho Evening accompanying her, remaining thero until the 28th, on which day, at 3 a.m., tho galo having moderated, sho left, and boing favored with fino wea'her but light variable winds, reached tho whnrf at 4p m. on the 29th. Tho Wonga brings a full general cargo, G calves, 8 lambs, and a number of pigs. Tho schooner Storm biid left Otngo heads on thel4lh Oct, a steady eastorly breeze blowing at tho timo. On tho 15th the wind veerod suddenly to the N. W, and tho day after blew us a furious gale. Whilst in tho act of weaving ship a heavy squall struck tho vessel carrying away the main boom. Gale moderating, but still blowing liard, she on tho 17th, ran into Stcwnrt's Island to procure a Hew boom, coming to nn nnchor in Port William. Hero sho lay until tho 30th, when the wind shifting into tho S.E. she mado sail. Tho day after when off Mason's Bay, tho wind veered into Iho old quarter, obliging her to run for nh n'nohornge 01160 more. ' She left Mason's Bay on the 7th instant ; on tho 9th discovered that her foremast was badly sprung under tho 'trepsel tree ; which obliged them to strike the topmast nnd fish it. On tho 15th sho arrived off Hokitika, the next day coming to au anchor. A gale from Iho N W., however, com. polled her to slip tho dny after, wheroby thiough tho buoy ropo parting sh'o lost 34 fnthoms of chain nnd nn anchor .% Remained outsido under canvas until ihc 29th waiting for a »lant to get in ; having during the interim beon onco in tow of tho Lioness which was obliged to cast her off through the heavy weather prevailing at tho timo. "On that day, however, tho tug again made fast to her, towing her wifely to tbo wharf in tho afternoon. Tho Star of tho Evening, for tho Grey River, encountered tho same severe weather ns the Kcern, in attempting the Fovennx Straits pnsfiage, and had to put- bnck, nnd come north about.
