COMMERCIAL.
Wkst Coast Timbs Office, Friday Evening.
A fair amount of bnsincj-s has been dono during tho week. Tho effects of the Into rush of goods in overstocking the market is gradually disappearing, while Iho opening of several wholesale houses has resulted in giving a fmunessHo operations which must have a bcnctlciul result on our trade. Tho arrivals during the week, although somewhat numerous, nro not in excess of tho demands made by our increased population. The rapid settlement on tho township has created a demand for a higher class of liquors nnd provisions than havo hitherto been imported.
Spirits generally aro extremely dull nt importers' prices. Tho principal lines — palo brandy and geneva"— aro almost unsaleable. The stocks of these in bond are extremely heavy. Wines, especially sherry, in case, continues a ding. Somo demand bos been nuulo for dark brandy, without however advancing quotations Our Summer season is not yet sdlioicntly marked to cause any perceptiblo increaso in tho consumption of beer. Tobaccos aro unaltered. A parcol ofjluvannnh cigars wa.i cleared last week at auction nt a low figure, Sugars continue heavy in stock ; a good demand usually exists lor this staple, but storekeeper nro fully supplied for the present, and only buy at auction under inducement. Teas and coffee, except of superior kinds, aro low. In Adelaide" Hour a decided buoyancy is apparent J notwithstanding tho expected arrival of a cargo, the principal parcels in tho hands of holders was bought up early this week at L 33 to'L3l los. j this wns caused doubtless by early intelligence of tho mlvanc6 which has taken place in tho Australian markets. Tho Eucalyptus is reported outsido with nearly 100 tons on board, the' balanco of her cargo being horso feed. Chilian shows evidenco of nn upward tendency on tho present low quotations. Oats, nouo in the market— quoted as high as 11s. and 12s. per bushel. Chuff, largely imported of late, nnd bought in at auction yesterday at a slight advnnco on freight. Oilmon's stores aro inquired for — lobsters, bardincs, and king lish, being in good domand. Tho bareness of our market in .butter was shown by a fow kogs of Wollongong having been disposed of at auction this week nt 3s. Gd. to 3fl. 74d. por Ib. Bacon nnd hams conisnuo to advance staidly. Virst-clnsi cheese is very salcablo at fair prices. Ironmongery is getting scarce, and likely to advanco shoi tly. American axes continue at high prices. Short- handled shovels being very low in^tock. Building materials of every kind are wanted.
Timber and galvanised iron havo readily ';con cleared at auction at high price's.
Tho nbsenco of bank accommodation curtails to a great extent the operations of our wholesalo dealers, and in many cases forces them to encroach on tho business of tho retailor, or at least tho middleman. Wo shall not discuss how far a cash business is indispensable on " a diggings township, yot unquestionably our position has become so important as to demand, in tho interests of tho on tiro commercial community, a fair consideration for so vital a subject.
