Through the heavy S\W. gale blowing all day yes'erday, tho consequent accumulation of a great quantity of silt at the mouth of the river, and an unusually heavy sea tumbling home, harbor steamers were unnhle to go outside to attend to the steamers Souchays, Claud Hamilton, and Alhambra, and no vessel save the p.s. Bruce was permitted to enter by the signal-man. Mails that were mnde up for each of the above steam ships have been, therefore, unavoidably detained, and no cargo has yet been discharged from either. Last evening they were under Beam, standing off from the land. As the Alhambra name in ballast, save a few unimpmtant packages, it is somewhat doubtful whether she will return or proceed on her voyage to Duntclin.
The steamer Souchays Captain Simpson, left Melbourne on 'Wednesday, the 18th October, and arrived off Hokitika on Monday, the 23rd instant, at two pm. Experience! light, variable winds throughout. She brings 360 passengers, and 40 tons of cargo.
Of those vessels which have lately been stranded on our beach, wo are happy in being nWe to report favorably, all with the exception of the Maria and Samson, being either on tho move towards tho river or about to be moved. The Maid of Erin has been taken in hum! by Mr Edgar and is now some forty feet from her first position nearer the river. The Tiger is progressing well towards tb,e rise of the beach ; she is at present in the haisls of the carpenters, who ate mnking some Tigfossary repairs. The Mount Alexander, and Deupnju are close to the river side, and in a few days wo expect to sco these useful vessels once more afloat. Tho John Bullock will soon followjtho Others, tenders for launching her having been called for by her agents. , , - r
The ketch Pecret left Melbourne on the 14fch inst., making tho land of New Zealand on wo 21st. She was delayed by strong adverse wsds from reaching the Toadßtead until the 24th,' on which day she sailed over the bar \ip to -the wharf. This smart little vessel has made an excellent run, considering her small size, she being only 18 tons burden. She brings across an assorted cargo. Her captain stated that but for the unfavorable weather after making the land, he should have made tho run in seven days.
