JOHN PERRIAM, Kanieri. NUGGETS. NUGGETS. NUGGETS and specimens suited for breast pins can bo sold at a high price at J. P. Christenson's, watclunakor and jowollor, Rovcll street. mO tho ELECTORS of HOKITIKA, GREYMOUTII, and tho MINERS of tho Surrounding Diggings. A rcquost having beon mado to mo that I should givo somo expression to my views in rospoct to my candidaturo as a member for tho Provincial Council of Canterbury, I willingly do so, although briefly, as it woidd bo unfair to thoso who havo dono mo tho honor of bringing mo forward, as woll as to mysolf, were the electors loft in tho dark on this matter. I am in favour of road linos being laid out from tho beach lino to tho various diggings, in order that tho nocossarios of lifo and tho matorials required by tho mining population bo acquired at a modorato price. That tho various townships on tho West Coast should bo withdrawn from tho operations of tho Goldfiolds Act, tho samo to bo immediately survoyed and allotinonts sold on an equitable basis. Tho largo oxpendituro in building already contracted by tho earlior settlors require this . Provision shoidd also bo mado for tho acquiring leases of agricultural areas without delay. Hospitals for tho sick, and proporly qualified medical attondauco in tho various mining contros. Cheaper Food. — Tho present famino prices procludo tho goldfiolds from boing proporly opened up and dovelopod. Tho nocossity of tho ports boing iminodiatoly opened must forco itself on tho attontion of tho authorities if stops aro takon by tho largo population to make it known. Tho prohibition as to tho driving of cattlo from tho Otago and Southland provincos should bo sot asido, as it is well-known that thoro aro largo hords of cattlo to bo acquired there at a lower rato than can bo procured in tho Australian market. Bottor Postal aiTangomonts — in fact, a rd-organisation of tho wholo systom, Hokitika should bo indpondent of tho Postal authorities at Christchurch, and thoro should bo nioro frequent communication with tho raining districts, and branch offices established at tho various diggings. Properly qualified Harbor-masters, who shoidd in connection with thoir duties tako caro of tho correct buoying of tho channels, tho removal of snags, and attontion to tho signal stations ; this oflico should bo independent of qualified pilots, thoy being an ossontial necessity to Hokitika. Tho Sanitory condition of Hokitika, tho Groy township and othor parts appear to mo to bo sadly neglected, at least, so far as Hokitika has coino under my obsorvation. What should bo a promonado, whore health and recreation may bo onjoyed, has bocomo a porfoct nuisance from tho slaughter houses, and othor dolotorious influences, bosidos tho danger to lifo and limb. Thoso aro somo of tho most important matters which appear to mo should bo brought at onco boforo tho notico of tho authorities, and should I bo olocted I will do my best to havo thorn carried out. I am, Yours truly, ■ • ED. M'GLASHAN. 25th Oot., 1865. •
