QENTLEMEN,— I am in receipt of your vory kind and flattering requisition to allow myself to bo placed in nomination as a candidate to represent you in tho Provincial Council of tho Provinco of Canterbury $ and it is with much ploasuro I accedo to tho request of so numerous and influential a body of gontlomon. Tho largo and important intorosts now connected with tho West Coast Goldfiolds I am awaro will require a groat amount of attontion and time from any ouo that may bo olectod as your representative. That I am propared to givo, should I havo tho honor of boing roturned as your roprosontativo ; and it will bo my object in and out of Council, to reprosent tho wants and desires of this vory largo and increasing population to tho bost of my ability. Since my arrival in Hokitika, I havo observed many things that require immcdiato attontion ot tho hands of tho Canterbury Government, and I feol assured thoso only requiro to bo sufficiently represented to tho authorities to moot with that duo attontion which tho magnitude of tho mining and mercantile intorosts of tho Wost Coast require I regret, Gontlomon, that important matters require my immodiato roturn to Otago for a short time, and that I will bo uuablo, from this oauso, to bo present at tho nomination. Should I, howovcr, have tho honor of boing roturnod as ono of your roprosontativos, I shall tako tho earliest opportunity of meeting tho Electors, in tho various districts connected with tho goldfiolds, so as to mako myself hotter acquainted with thoir requirements.
