RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

(Before G. a. FitzGerald, Esq., R.M.) Saturday, October 14th. Drunk. — John Crawley was fined £1 for drunkenness. • Stealing Beef. —Edward Cooling and — Sullivan were charged with stealing a quantity of beef, value 18s, from the Star of Tasmania, lying at Gibson's Quay. From the evidence of the constable, it appeared that he had received information respecting, the stolen property, and that he proceeded to the tent of the prisoners, who were • camped on. the quay, and in the tent he found the beef produced, which the cook identified as belonging to the Star of Tasmania. The prisoners pleaded that they found the beef outside the tent, and they supposed that it had been left there by some one who intended to call for it, and they gave it house room. Sentenced to two months' imprisonment with hard labor . :,,.,., Stealing Government Property. — Edward Gusset was charged with stealing Government property of the value of 2s 9d. , Froni the evidence of James Drew it appeared that he saw the prisoner wrench off a rail from < the Goyernment reserve on Friday afternoon, I ' and carry it away, apparently with'fthe intention of pitching his tent upon it.' The prisoner, who pleaded that, he was drunk vi the time and was ■ unconscious of the enormity of his offence, was sentenced to '48 hours' hnprisonuinet.

Disobeying Orders. — Isaac Dennis and John Greo, two seamen on board the Tambo, were respectively sentenced to 48 hours' imprisonment with hard labor, for disobeying the lawful commands of the captain. Assault. — Thomas Hannill, a seaman v on board the Tambo, was found guilty \ of assaulting the mate of that vessel whilst on the passage from Melbourne hither, and was sentenced to two months' hard labor.

Nothing of consequence transpired at the Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.
