HOKITIKA IMPROVEMENT COMMITTEE.
The usual weokly mooting took place on Thursday evening at Bracken's Hotel. Present— Messrs. Cassius (chair), Messrs. Hawkes, Ecclesfield, Bracken, Hay, Prossor, Palmer, Anderson, and Clarke.
Moved by Mr. Prosser, seconded by Mr. Hay, and carried — " That tho letter of Mr. Lanan^e, in reply to tho memorial and communication of tho captains, bo received and stand over for consideration,"
Moved by Mr. Hawkes, and seconded by Mr. Palmer — "That Messrs. Craig and Co. bo , communicated with; and informed that their tondor for tho formation of Wharf-street will be accepted, on condition of their depositing 25 per cent, of tho contract money as security for tho completion of tho work." Moved as an amondmont by Mr. Prossor, seconded by Mr. Hay—" That tho next lowest tender to Messrs. Davery and Co. (viz., Craig and Co.) be accepted, on the understanding that they comply with the regulations of this committeo, by depositing ton per cent, of tho contract money. ' Tho original motion was carried. It being resolved, upon the motion of Mr. Munro, that tho committee take into consideration the best moans to bo adopted for the prevention of tho spread of fire, Mr. Bracken proposed, and Mr. Hay seconded — " That a publio meeting bo callod, for the purpose of organising a firo brigade, and that a sub-committee, consisting of Messrs. Munro, Anderson, and the mover bo appointed to carry out the same." Carried. Moved by Mr. Anderson, seconded by Mr. Bracken, and carried — " That a letter be addrossed to Mr. Inspector Broham, respectfully requesting him to prevent the drapers and others from obstructing tho footpaths by exposing their goods outsido and above their doors." Moved by Mr. Prosser, seconded by Mr. Palmer — " That a memorial be sent to the General Government, praying that the present landing place be oxtonded in a westerly direction hundred yards, as tho present limited space is insufficient for tho requirements of this important district." Moved by Mr. Prosser, seconded by Mr. Clark — " That Mr. Cassius bo added to the deputation to wait upon Mr. Inspector Broham in regard to the nuisances at present oxisting." Mr Hay tondored his resignation as hon. see. to the committee, and a vote of thanks to him was unanimously passed. Mr Munro was then appointed to fill the vacant office, and Messrs Palmer and Ecclesfiold to superintend the publio works now being carried out for the committeo. Moved by Mr Hay, seconded by Mr Palmer — "That in consequence of no moneys having been disbursed up to the 12th inst., tho 13th bye-law bo dispensed with for this quarter. ' The accounts of Mossra Budd and Pearson were passed, and tho committeo adjourned. NOTICE OP MOTION. Mr Anderson to move — " That Inspector Broham bo writton to, pointing out to him tho great danger to lifo and property which is incurred by the practice of holding horso sales in the publio streets, and requesting him to tako somo steps to prevent a continuance of the practice."
