' The detention of the mail was attributable to the breaking dovrn of tho steamer Golconda near Suez. The Nemesis took her place, and brought on the mails toGalle.
London, 25th July. Parliament was dissolved by Royal Commission on the 6th July. Serious riots took place during the elections at Nottingham, Dublin, and Belfast. At the latter place tbe old Orange and Ribbon fond was revived, the military called out, and several lives lost, and much injury done to property. The elections had resulted in a gain to tho Liberals over the old Parliament of thirty-one seats. The leading Conservatives go back to Parliament, Amongst the defeated candidates wero Lord Amberley (Earl Russell's son) at Leeds, Mr. Gladstone at Oxford, Lord Ashley Paget, Mr. Walter of the "Times," and others. Mr. Gladstone's son was elected for Chester. Mr. Gladstone was also subsequently returned for South Lancashire. The Great Eastern reached Valentia on tho 12th July, and af. er effecting a junotion with the shoro started on her voyage on the 23rd. Sorious fires had occurred in London, and immense misohief was done. The British Museum had a narrow escape, and was slightly damaged. Alderman Mackay was elected Lord Mayor of Dublin. The national rifle contest oamo off at Wimbledon. The Queen's prize was won by Private Sharraan of the 4th Yorkshire Volunteers, and the Eloho Challenge Shield by England. The infant Prinoo of their Royal Highnesses the Prince and Princess of Wales was christened on the 7th — George Frederick Ernest Albert. A marriage between tho Prince of Orango and the Princess Helena is definitely arranged. The Queen of the Netherlands and the Queen of the Sandwioh Islands are on a visit to her Majesty. They were received with Royal salutes. The King of tho Belgians is dangerously ill. Tho harvest prospects throughout the kingdom aro good. Mr Jefferson, the American comedian, had arrived at London. Part of (ho French squadron hod arrived at Plymouth. Forty-six thousand pilgrims at Mecca died in three days from tho ravages of cholera. In Alexandria the mortality was estimated at four hundred daily. Sixteen thousand Europeans abandoned the town in dismay. Another source of the Nile has been discovered by Mr Baker. It is named Nyanza Albert. Obituary. — Lord Denbigh, Drs. Daniel, Ferguson, and Woodward ; Admiral Woolcombe, Colonel Drysdale, Sir William Lawson, Lady Somerset, Lady Reay, the hon.
