Pbotosed Annexation of Poverty Bat to Hawke's Bat. — It is by this time pretty generally known that tho European inhabitants of Poverty Bay have forwarded a petition to the General Assembly — which has since been presented by Mr Ormond — praying that their district may be annexed to the province of Hawke's Bay ; and we learn that the resident Natives are forwarding a petition to the same effect. The settlers on that portion of the coast urge, and with a great show of right, that they are situated at too great a distance from Auckland for purposes of government — that Napier is comparatively speaking, easily accessible by land, while it is within a few hours sail by sea, and in every respect more convenient. It is not necessary to remind our readers that the white population of Poverty Bay is considerable ; that tho settlement is a very old one, and that interests of some importance have sprung up in the locality. Probably tho peril which for some time past has threatened the Europeans, has forced the subject on their attontion, by showing on the one hand tho utter futility of depending for' succour upon a city distant some three hundred miles, and with which communication can be had with water only, and, on tho other, the readiness and facility with which intercourse was opened and carried on v> ith tho capital of this province. — Hawke's Bay Herald.
