Friday evening. woek ba# bcon This is
bar, as detailed in another part of the present issuo. Stocks, in many lines though extremely light, aro almost immoveable ia consequence of tho large parcels on board the vessels outside, awaiting a turn in tho chapter of accidents to enter tho harbor. Retail dealers buy only tojsupply daily wants, and as a natural result, one day sees some lino at a famino price, and the next the same article almost unsalo* able. Thus— candles, which at the close of last week, freely fetched 2s 3d per lb, brought on Monday Is 9d, and Is ]0d with difficulty; this having been caused by tho arrival of the Wallaby in the interval with about 300 boxes on board. The price of bacon |is rapidly advancing, a« shown by a considerable parcel of Sinclair's having been submitted to auction reserved, and cleared at Is Bd, hams at Is lOd. Flour, which from being ono of our principal staple articles— from the peculiar dangers it runs in importing, and the really light stocks which wo believe aro on hand— should rulo high, is actually very dull of sale. Sugar, especially a good crystal, is very saleable at fair rates. Company's Ist white is also in demand at high prices, «/is to 68s having been offered within tho last day or two. Spirits of sui table brands are rapidly passing into consumption at figures which, to importers by sniling vessels, must pay handsomely. First class brands in bulk ruu aB high as 30s, duty paid, although sorao of the wholesale houses have quitted lots at a much lower figure. Tho deraaud for caao brandy does not seem to equal that in bulk, as 62s to 65s may bo fairly stated at tho ruling price Geneva, JDKZ, tho favorito brand in this market, is lively, and several parcels have changed hands at 62s 6d. A very fair demand exists for whiskey in caso, especially Kirkliston, whioh now brings without difficulty as high ns 40s and 425. In rum and wines sales aro very alow, and only limited parcels are disposed of. In Oilmen's stores a considerable businos? haa been done within within tho last few days, tho staple articles in this lino— salmon, lobsters, sardines, and oysters, being speedily cleared at satisfactory prices. A good deal of speculation has takenplaco in or,ts, several buyers taking advantage of the present demand for horse-feed for the (Jroy, to purohace parcels at a prico, thereby causing large holders to seek an advance. Taieri oats in good condition are worth at least 6s 9<i, while oulsido kinds are rather less ; wo believe prices for gocd samples will shortly advance to far beyond the present rates.
