GIRLS’ COLLEGE SWIMMING SPORTS

M. MORRELL AND C. LOCKETT WIN CHAMPIONSHIPS

With three wins and a second placing. M. Morrell won the senior championship at the annual swimming sports conducted on Saturday by the Wanganui Girls’ College. N. Gibson, winning the breaststroke and diving, was placed second, four points behind. The junior championship went to C. Lockett, with 18 points, V. Clare being runner-up with 10 points. The inter-house competition resulted in a win for Somerset with 541 points, 18 points ahead of Devon. The diving cups were won by N. Gibson and V. Clare in the senior and junior sections, respectively.

In the course of events two new records were established and one time equalled. C. Lockett lowered the standing- time of 19sec. (established by F. Leytham in 1944) for the junior 25 yards backstroke race to 18 3-ssec. She also equalled 33 l-ssec., which is the record time for the 50 yards junior crawl event. In the senior division, M.
