THE STREET MARCH

LARGE CROWD SEES STIRRING PARADE An appetiser of the pleasure in store with the A grade quickstep in the afternoon, the selection in the evening and the drum-major's display on the Sunday was given the citizens of Wanganui on Saturday morning when 23 pipe bands took part in a street march held in conjunction with the national pipe band contests. Winner in the A grade was Timaru, and the champion B grade band, City of Wellington, took the honours In the B grade. Bands were dispatched from the starling point at three-minute intervals, tlie whol e parade taking over an hour. So enthusiastic was the public that they started taking their positions over half an hour before the scheduled starting time, and very few of them left before the parade was finished. Points were for marching alone and not playing, but the bands, with their usual generosity, played all the way. Four judges were stationed at points unknown to the bands. "All the bands put on a first-class performance, and th e general standard was very high," commented the supervisor, Capt. J. Malcolm, M.B.E. The points awarded to the various bands were as follows: — A GRADE.
