INTEREST QUICKENS AS OPENING OF QUEEN CARNIVAL DRAWS NEAR

With the announcement that Miss Margaret Rubery has been selected as the Sports Queen and th. election tonight of the Town Queen, interest in the Marton Queen Carnival which opens on March 22 is quickening. This was clearly demonstrated by the large attendance on Monday night whica gathered to further the interests of lhe Sports Queen. At a previous meeting, Mr. A. Gracie was elected chairman, Mr. Ron Stantiall, secretary and Mr. Reg Darrow, treasurer. At Monday night's meeting, Mr. L. Mcßeth was appointed deputy-chairman and Mr. R. Parkinson assistant.secretary. The following were appointed a general committee: Messrs. D. McLennan, W. G. Aitken, A. M. Smart, L. Mcßeth, C. Henderson, G. Signal, B. McElwain, C. T. Rubery, H. McLean, D. Hart, R. Price, K. Kerr, D. Watson, G. Griffin, C. Stafford, E. O. Pryce, J. Jensen, O. Keystone and F. Rubery. The following were elected a ladies’ committee: Mesdames D. Downs, A. R. Beckman, M. Fisher, P. McCaul, A. H. Hammond, J. Kendrick, D. Gardiner, P. Morrison, N. Cairncross, R. Rivers, Misses L. Barr, N. Hutton, E. Miles, A. Campbell, M. Thompson, A. Bosselman, J. McDonald, L. Bosselman.

At a subsequent meeting of the ladies’ committee, Mrs. M. McLennan was appointed convener, and Miss N. Hutton, secretary. It was decided to adopt red ana white as the official colours lor the Sports Queen. Machinery was then set in motion to make preliminary arrangements foi the conducting of the campaign. Many and varied were the suggestions advanced and when the carnival gets under way, Martonians will no doubt be very surprised with some of the novefty turns to be introduced. As yet they remain on the ’’secret" list and cannot be pubhslied. Voting at the meeting for the Sports Queen was very close, in fact it is understood it was a “photo finish" margin. The two unsuccesslul candidates, Miss Doreen Paterson and Mrs. Margaret McLennan, will act as princesses to the Queen. Miss Paterson was nominated by the Hockey Association and the Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club while Mrs. McLennan was sponsored by the tootbailers of the district. By means of this carnival, the Marton Sports Society is endeavouring to raise ±2OOO. A New Plymouth Queen Carnival conducted by the Comoined Sport's Corftmittee concluded last week and £lBOO was raised. Town Queen. The public are invited to attend a meeting in the Sports Hall to-night, for the purpose of electing the Town Queen. There are three nominations —Misses Mary Shannon, Pat Brown, and June Pickford. If the enthusiasm which was in evidence at the sports meeting on Monday night, is again displayed to-night, then a bumper meeting is assured. Country Queen. The convener ot the Country Queen, Mr. K. McK. Dur.can, has called a meeting to be held in Messrs. Hodder and Tolley's building, High Street, tonight. All interested in furthering the interests of the Country Queen are invited to attend. Arrangements at this meeting are to be made for the nomination ot Queen. CONDUCT OF HOTELS. The conduct of hotels in the district for the past quarter has been very satisfactory, reported the Rangitikei Licensing Committee at the quarterly meeting held at noon in Marton yesterday. Mr. A. Coleman S.M., presided, a'fld associated with him were Messrs. F. Purnell, F. R. H. Brice, K. H. Fowler, and A. W. Amon. A permanent transfer of a publican's licence was granted from Mr. C. C. Price to Mr. H. D. McManaway, in respect of the Rangitikei Hotel, Bulls. PLUNKET STREET SALE WELL PATRONISED. Favoured by a beautiful day, the street sale held in Broadway yesterday by the Marton Plunket Society was an unqualified success and the six stalls did excellent business. The organisation was a tribute to the president, Mrs. C. A. Tidy and the secretary, Miss L. Cook, and their willing band of officials who did noble work throughout the day. Although, last evening, the total gross proceeds were not available, it is believed they .will be in the vicinity of about £2OO which is a record. The stall-holders weYe:— Needlework: Mesdames W. F. Besides buying from the stalls, many patrons gave generous donations tor which the committee is indeed very gratelul. During the day the president kindly entertained the officials to lunch and afternoon tea. Tile competition winners were: Teaset, Mrs R. Butt; doll, Mr. G. H. Smitn; groceries, Mr. C. Grieg; knitted set, Mrs. R. A. Church; swing, Mrs. H. Matthews; cake, Mrs. S. Morrison. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE GROUP MEETING. Ccnvened by Mrs. A, Watts, Marton Junction, a meeting ot the Kotakitanga groups of Women’s Institutes was held at Stanway last week and presided ovet by Mrs. Short (Stanway). About 7b members were present from Awahuri, Haleombe, Bulls, Merton Junction, Stanway and Sanscn. After routine business had been discussed it was arranged to hold lhe next group meeting at llalcora.be on September 17, when the competitions will be a 21b. treacle tin of spring 11m,'(.is and three ginger nut biscuits. Members were asked to bring at least half a pound of biscuits which are to be sent to the Associated Country Women’s Institutes in England tor distribution among children. The speaker tor the afternoon was Mrs. H. 19. Somerset of the Feilding Community Centre and lie took as his subject a travel talk into our minds dealing with the teaching of philosophy and religion in the past and

present day. A vote of thanks was accordingly passed to the speaker for his interesting address. The competition winners for a hospital box of flowers were: Miss O. Ferguson (Haleombe) 1, Marton Junction Sunshine Circle 2, Mrs. S. Lewis (Marton Junction) 3. For the article made from a sugar bag: Mrs. Sanson (Bulls) 1, Mrs. Watts (Marton) 2, Mi’s Hills (Bulls) 3. The flowers were very kindly taken to Palmerston North by Mrs. Bond, Awahuri, to be delivered to the hospital by our visitor, Mrs. Penketh. Afternon tea was later served by the members of the Stanway Institute. HOCKEY AT RATA:

Endeavours are being made in the Rata district to enter a team in the Rangitikei Ladies' Hockey Association’s competition this winter and with this object in view a meeting has been convened for Thursday, March 13, in the Rata Hall. All interested in the formation of a club, whether players or not are invited to lend their support. MARTON SWIMMING CLUB. For the purpose of preparing the Marton swimmers, who are to journey to Taihape on Saturday, for the third and final contest for the Deal Rose Bowl, a series of time trials will be held in the Marton baths to-night in conjunction witli the Marton Club's weekly swimming sports. “We hope to have all swimmers in attendance” said an official of the club yesterday. At present Taihape is leading in the triangular contest by a substantial margin, with Marton second and Hunterville third. It is for the purpose of improving the local contestants that the,time trials are being held this evening. Thursday, March 13: Meeting in Rata Hall to consider the formation of a Rata Ladies' Hockey Club.
