LONDON CENTRE OF DIAMOND MARKET OF THE WORLD

(Special N.Z.P.A. Correspondent) London, March 3 London is now declared to be the centre of the world’s diamond trade. During the past year more than £30,000,000 worth of uncut diamonds were flown to Britain, most of them from Africa. In London they are sorted and redistributed to cutters in all parts of the world. There is preference for sending diamonds by air, small consignments going as ordinary airmail, and larger packages as air freight. Many airI liners are now fitted with a special strongbox. One of most valuable consignments of diamonds to reach London in the past 12 months was Britain’s share of the wartime pool of industrial diamonds which had been kept in Canada. There were 12 consignments, each valued at £BOO,OOO. There was a special guard on duty at Heath Row to meet aircraft with diamonds used at the Aga Khan’s wedding ceremony. They were valued at £750,000.
