MAORI WAR EFFORT
SATISFACTION EXPRESSED Satisfaction with the response made for increased primary production and also regarding recruitment of Maors for the armed forces was expressed by Captain T. Hiroti, M.C., who is in charge of the Maori war effort in the Wanganui, Rangitikei and Waimarino districts. He said the whole idea underlying the proposal to organise and increase the Maori war effort is to get the Maori people as a whole to more fully appreciate the urgency of the need to prepare to the fullest extent, not only for the defence ot our own shores, but also for the wider and allround defence of the British Commonwealth of Nations. He stressed the need for every available man and woman, Maori and pakeha alike, to undertake a share in the defence of New Zealand in partticular. Tribal committees have been formed in each of the districts under the control of Captain Hiroti, and these are to assist him in his work. The function of the committees is to obtain volunteers for service in the Territorial Force for service in New Zealand only or in the same force for service within and beyond New Zealand. The committees also assist in recruiting for the Home Guard. On Monday, Lieut.-Col. H. C. Hemphill (Wellington) will visit Wanganui and confer with Captain Hiroti. That night a meeting of the representatives of the different tribe; in Captain Hiroti's district will meet at Ratana Pa, when matters affecting production and recruiting will be discussed.
