POLICE OFFICERS KEPT BUSY MANY APPLICATION FORMS Many requests to countersign applications for the purchase of seed potatoes, under the new scheme announced this week, have been received by police officers in Wanganui. It was stated yesterday that many people were under the impression that application forms would be supplied by the* police, whereas each applicant. if he cannot obtain a form from his retailer, must write his own. Many requests for signatures are expected by the police to-day, and it. has heen emphasised that if applicants have their own forms ready much unnecessary delay will be avoided. The last dav for lodging applications with retailers is next Monday. Under the new scheme limited supplies of seed potatoes are being mad 0 available to private gardeners, but the maximum quantity for any person will be 281bs. Twenty-six police officers are available in Wanganui to countersign order forms. Annlicants must certify that they normally plant a quantify of seed polatoes for private use, and I hat they have h"en unable to obtain supplies. Many requests for police signatures were received at Central Station. Bell Street, yesterday, and suburban constables* were also inundated with inquiries. “The quantity available is such that all demands cannot be met.” states an announcement by th? Primary Industries Controller regarding the release of a limited quantity o r seed potatoes for planting bv home gardeners in th° North Island. “In order, that some control over distribution can be kent, conditions have been drafted, compliance with which is essential before potatoes can be supplied.”

Seedsmen are required to total all applications lodged and forward their figures to the Primary Industries Controller in Wellington bv September 5. while retaining the applications for inspection by the Department of Agriculture. A maximum retail pric° of 4d a lb. is fixed. “Should the quantity available for distribution b° less than the applications these will be fiffed on a pro rata basis.” states the announcement. “No cognisanc° will be taken of variety or size of seed.”
