MARTON NOTES
FOR PATRIOTIC FUNDS SUCCESSFUL DANCE There was an excellent attendance at the patriotic dance in the Druids’ Hall, Marton, on Saturday evening. The proceeds are to be devoted to the Fern Flats-Bonny Glen patriotic “shop” to be held this month. The music was provided by Lawton Barry’s orchestra and extras were played by Messrs. G. Denbow and K. Wells. Competitions were won by Mr. Murphy and Miss Joyce Anstis (Monte Carlo), and Mr. T. E. Barton (chocolates). Mr. A. Gracie acted as M.C., and Mrs. M. C. Fenwicke was in charge of the supper arrangements. VITAL STATISTICS The vital statistics for the month of July for Marton were as follow,, the figures for 1941 being in parentheses: Births 9 (15), deaths 5 (1), marriages 3 (3). AN EARTHQUAKE A severe shock of earthquake was felt at Marton at 12.40 a.m. on Sunday. The direction was from east to west. No damage has been reported, in Marton. FIRE BRIGADE EUCHRE The final for an aggregate series of euchre evenings conducted by the Marton Fire Brigade was decided on Saturday evening. Mrs. J. Price and Mr. A. Worship being the winners. The evening winners were Mrs. J. Price and Mr. W. Moss, and the consolation awards went to Mrs. Eames and Mr. O. Brabyn. There were forty players. NATIONAL SAVINGS The flag was flying at the Marton Post Office on Saturday as an indication that Marton had reached its quota for 41 successive weeks. The committee are very pleased that the residents are responding so consistently for this effort. HAWKESTONE GOLF CLUB A round for the Stableford bogey for the May trophy was played on best card with a score of 37-16-43. R. Saturday, Les Smith handing in the C. Ball, 31-8-39, and J. Hunter 24-15-39 were runners-up. With Ingrid Bergman and Lana Turner as the two sharply-contrasting women in the life of the doctor who turned himself from an honoured man into a monster, the new picture was directed behind closed doors by Victor Fleming as his first picture since “Gone With the Wind.”
