AUSTRALIAN RAILWAY WASHOUTS
FLOODS REPLACE BUSHFIRES AND DROUGHT FRUITGROWERS SUFFER HEAVY LOSSES SYDNEY, March 1. Floods causing railway washouts have replaced drought conditions and bushfires in the inland areas of New South Wales and Victoria and parts of South Australia. The best rain for more than a year has fallen in the wheat and pastoral areas of New South Wales, and is still falling. There are similar conditions in Victoria, where in the north-east upwards of seven inches of rain have been registered since Friday. Rivers are running from bank to bank in Gijfpsland, while in Melbourne 772 points for the month represents an all-time record for February. Fruitgrowers along the Tamar River in Tasmania suffered heavy losses in a gale which destroyed from 25 to 30 per cent, of the pear and early apple crons.
