SERIOUS CHARGE

MARRIED COUPLE BEFORE COURT

[ Per Press Association.] HASTINGS, Feb. 28.

Appearing before Mr. J. Miller, S.M., in the Hastings Magistrate’s Court this morning, a married couple, Donald Arnitt, aged 37, and Margaret Minnie Ethel Gladys Arnitt, aged 28, were jointly charged with unlawful carnal knowledge of a girl under 16, on or about January 17 at Twyford. Asking for a remand, DetectiveSergeant Revell stated that the case had unusual features and promised to be of very great length. An adjournment to March 15 was agreed to by counsel for the accused who, while consenting, asked for bail. This was opposed by Detective-Ser-geant Revell and the application was heard in chambers, after which the magistrate declined to allow bail.
