CASTLECLIFF GAS
NEW HOLDER OPENED IMPROVED SUPPLY EXPECTED j The new Castlecliff gas-holder which will also assist in keeping u; the pressure in Gonville, was official!; opened yesterday, when the chairmar of the Wanganui Corporation gas de partment, Mr. G. E. Bennett, turnec on the supply. Those present were: The Mayor o Wangan'ui (Mr. W. J. Rogers), aru Councillors A. W. Scoullar, H. Law’ rence, J. J. Scott, G. P. Hawkins, J F. Broad; the manager of the gas department, Mr. W. J. Stone; cit> engineer, Mr. L. R. Row; town clerk Mr. G. Murch; Mr. J. A. Helliwell New Zealand representative of Clayton, Sons and Co., Leeds, who sup plied the material; Mr. R. Hunger- | ford, assistant manager of the Dunedin Corporation gas department; anc Mr. I. Gibbs, one of the oldest residents of Castlecliff.
The Mayor said he hoped the holder would serve the community for many years to come. He was sure Castlecliff residents would appreciate the additional pressure of gas and that other localities would also benefit by the extra supply. Mr. Bennett, who apologised for the absence of Councillors R. LCuthbertson, D. W. Earle, and C. N. Armstrong, said that the question of restricted pressure of gas had given the council and employees of the gas department great concern, and distant points in the city had to be served by boosting the pressure. Il was hoped that the new holder would do away with boosting and that more attention would be given to the supply in outlying areas. The Mayor proposed the toast of the contractors, and Mr. Halliwell, in reply, said that gas was first manufactured in 1688, when one of the original Claytons experimented by (making it in a bladder. He thankeu Mr. Stone and Mr. Bennett for the i assistance they had given to the contractors.
Mr. Stone said he was very pleased to have the holder in use, for one of the large holders would have to come out of commission for repairs, and the new holder would be able to take up the supply in the meantime. In the past the greatest difficulty had been experienced in getting Castlecliff served with gas and this had applied more particularly during holiday periods when there was an increased demand. The job had been carried out in a very satisfactory way by the contractors.
Mr. "Helliweli handed Mr. Bennett a fountain pen and pencil from the contractors as a souvenir of the occasion. . ,
Mr. I. Gibbs spoke for Castlecliff residents, expressing appreciation of the prospective better supply of gas.
