SPANISH WARFARE

LOYALISTS’ CAUSE SYMPATHY IN WANGANUI A Well-attended meeting of sympathisers of the Spanish loyalists in their struggle for democracy was held in McGruer’s Hall last Sunday night, and was presided over by Mr. W. J. Rogers, Mayor of Wanganui. Sister” R. N. Shadbolt, of the nursing staff recently evacuated from Spain, gave a vivid description of the horrors of modern warfare as carried out by the invaders and outlined the immense amount of work that was needed to establish and maintain ambulance and hospital services. Food and medical supplies were always difficult to obtain, and the attention needed by refugees from towns and villages that had been bombed kept the volunteer staffs working at high pressure continuously. The sufferings of the women refugees with their children now in France is still a big problem. Mr. J. J. Scott, Deputy Mayor, and Mr. W. D. Aysen, chairman of the Wanganui Medical Aid Committee, made appeals for funds and also for volunteers to collect them. Headquarters of the Spanish Medical Committee recently cabled £5OO to Paris to assist the refugees, but much more is needed immediately. Official lists are now at the “Chronicle” and Herald offices.
