MUNICIPAL GOLF LINKS

REPORT BY EXPERT

! The Wanganui City Council had be- | fore it last, night a report by the golf 'architect, Mr. G. H. Redhead, with reIference to the municipal golf links. The report was received and the city engineer (Mr. L. F. Row) instructed Io give effect to the recommendations as far as is practicable. “The lay-out, taking in the new I ground, provides .nine holes of stanjdard length and gives an additional ■9OO yards, making the total length of (the course 2930 yards,” Mr. Redhead (reported. “The holes being longer I will accommodate more players and 'relieve the congestion. I feel sure that the new course will be very ipopular and bring in quite a good revenue. I strongly advise the council .not to purchase -ny additional land. !as it would not improve the lay-out. I suggest that you purchase a five gang Ransome fairway mower in preference to a Triplex. The former travels 1260 yards in cutting one acre against the Triplex 1 mile, 314 yards in cutting one acre. The saving of time spread over a year’s maintenance is considerable, as your fairways can easily be cut out in less than threequarters of a day. “The cost of the five gang cutler is £360 and the Triplex £l9B. I "When the construction work is i completed the sheep should not be al--1 lowed on the course as they will dam--1 age the greens and bunkers. The small amount of revenue which they .bring in would not pay a quarter of (the damage they will do, besides the inconvenience they cause the players, j “The small amount of rough between the fairways <?an be cut with the fairway mower in a day and , about three or four times a year. Trees should be planted in clumps as shown on plan. Plank seats should be provided at all the tees; the cost would be only a few pounds.”
