FOUND DEAD IN CABIN

MASTER OF BRITISH SHIP SPANISH ORDER REFUSED Received Feb. 28, 5.5 p.m. LONDON, Feb. 27. The owners have been advised that the master of the steamer Stangrove, which was captured by the Spanish nationalists, was found dead in his cabin. The Foreign Office learns that owing to a gale on February 23 the master refused a Spanish order to raise steam for the release of the Stangrove and that the vessel dragged its anchors and was stranded on rocks. The master refused to leave the ship with the rest of his crew'.

A London cablegram on February 18 stated that it was revealed that the nationalists on February 5 captured the British ship Stangrove near Barcelona and escorted it to Majorca. The Stangrove, with a crew of 15, left Valencia on February 3 with a cargo and a non-intervention observer aboard, and was outside territorial waters when captured. Britain strongly protested to General Franco on February 8, but no reply was received.
